I was not going to post this, but then read the post by Appalachian Blues, who shared the broken down truck story along with news of his son. It inspired me to share some personal news.

Well ... for the first time in my working life - 25 years - I am out of a job. Was a VP in a software company this morning, now just looking for a job. The sad part is that I had to make one of my own team layoffs this morning, and then it was my turn. Can't figure out if that is just justice or a really ridiculous thing.

Anyway we ain't gonna starve - no debt and my dear wife is very well paid, and no kids to worry about.

On the bright side I now have LOTS more time to play guitar, at least in the short term. I am still 8-10 or so years to retirement so I will get back to work sometime soon I expect. I really thought I would never be impacted by the so-called global recession - so that is a bit of a wake up call for sure.

Here's hoping this don't happen to anyone else in the LTG.

The talking heads on tv are saying that the recession is over, but the job market lags for six months behind the financial markets.

Sorry to hear about the job loss.

I was getting some major GAS pains looking at a DV-52 and a 55 being put on the block - so fortunately this situation has made that decision easy!

I'm gonna go play some golf now .... at a inexpensive course!

Tunes, there are a few of us on LTG who are out of work thanks to the global recession. Sounds like you are in reasonable shape to weather the downturn for a while - that's good!

Best wishes,
Michael

Sorry to hear about it Tunes; what's the old saying; 'When your neighbor's out of work, it's a recession ... when you're out of work, it's a depression'? There's another old saying: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana.

[Rant] Not picking on you Tunes but in the late 1980s through the mid-90s, the US government spent nearly $450 billion bailing out the US Savings and Loan industry from its bad loans; an industry that, like US banks / AIG / GM, was considered too big to let fail. The collapse of the S&Ls led to the stock market crash of 1987 and put the US into the recession of 1989-1992 which resulted in hundreds of thousands of jobs being lost through corporate 'down-sizing', 'right-sizing', and 're-engineering' ... all euphemistic sound bites for mass layoffs.

In the S&L collapse, a relatively few executives of under-capitalized S&Ls were making high-risk loans, good profits, and excellent bonuses. At the time, there were federal regulations on capitalization that applied to banks but nobody (meaning those pesky, red-tape bound federal regulators that everyone despises) was watching these people for whose mistakes everyone else paid the price in terms of job losses, relocations, and so on.

I'm old enough to have lived through the recessions of '74/'75, '81/'82, '89/'92, '99/'00, and now this and, frankly, if I'm expected to pick up the tab for the consquences of others taking excessive risk, then I want the Government, on my behalf, to regulate the amount of risk that I'm ultimately expected to pay for; either through tax-supported bailout programs or living through the negative economic consequences. [/End Rant] ... there ... I feel better

I'm glad you're in a position to withstand the hit and sincerely hope your stay on the bench is long enough to shave a stroke or two off your handicap but not so long as to be financially destructive. Try not to swing over the top and keep you head still on your putts. Best Wishes, John

That is the definition of lame right there. Sorry to hear about this, someone close to me just got laid off as well. Golf and guitar sounds like a good way to pass the time for a little while though.

Sorry to hear of your plight, Tunes. I'm constantly reminded to count my blessings; my job is just one of many...

My thoughts and prayers are with you and our other LTGers who are experiencing very difficult trials. Any one of us could be right there with you all tomorrow.

And we'd be in good company...

Tunes, my best wishes. I've been doing software for 25 years myself, and I've not been hit. I attribute that mostly to blind luck. I left my last job, though, over the holidays because I saw the writing on the walls and decided to go to a better place.

I wish you well in the hunt. Remember, it's *not* you. It's the times. And, remember to keep the important things in life in the forefront. I agree, music and community (LTG included) are part of that.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again - the LTG is a special place. There is no way I would post this anywhere else, and nowhere that I would get the responses that I have. Thanks!

Ugh... this situation is such a mess. And I know we like to keep things polite here on LTG, but yeah, I have to agree with CJ and fully recognize that "fair" is not part of what is going on here. Foolish complacency on my part to ever think is was; shame on me.

Tunes and Guitarslinger, sorry to hear your woes. I've never met you (or anyone else in LTG) in person, but you can tell it is a great, supportive community of good people. Hope things turn around soon.

Sorry to hear about the job loss. Good that you won't starve and no kids to worry about. Do you get any sort of jobless benefits from the Canadian gov't?

Peace
