Omission Beer....anyone else gone gluten free?

Or at least trying to? Anyway, we have and Winder brothers brewer in Portland is brewing this fantastic beer, gluten free for the most part, and only 3 styles: lager, pale ale and IPA. I really like the lager and pale ale.

Sometimes it is hard to find....but it is growing in popularity. Hand crafted too.

I only ask because I know 2 people that can't have gluten but beer doesn't seem to present a problem for them.

Interesting. I guess it all depends on your system and how much you can tolerate. Gluten is in grains and hops etc, so beer would have a lot of that. I can drink non luten beer, but what I like about Omission is that it tastes awesome, is handcrafted, and for the most part, takes the gluten out. So I figure, why not.

Just gonna throw out my OPINION here.... the SECOND study was more in depth and found that, unless you have Celiac Disease, that gluten intolerance is a bunch of hooey! I believe this whole-heartedly. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition that can be diagnosed and treated and symptoms are triggered by the ingestion of gluten. For real. You either have the disease, or you don't. Here's the article regarding that.

People are a tad crazy about their diets these days. Allergies and sensitivities have become VERY popular and trendy. People are not eating to stay alive these days, they're living to eat. And they have lots of excess time and energy to devote to fussing about their food. Plus we've got a whole generation of kids who are now adults that got to FUSS about what they did and didn't like. I have a friend who's 14 year old will eat bread, cheese, and chicken tenders. Period. That started a long time ago and he's too far gone now. Horrible diet and bad nutrition. But that's his mother's fault.

Anyway, if people wanna eat and drink gluten free, that's fine. But the human body can accommodate gluten just fine in a non-Celiac Disease situation.

You can't believe how amazingly fussy and crazy people have gotten about their food. Working in food service I see it daily.

The other day, I had a lady rattling on and on about all her sensitivities and allergies ..... listing all these ingredients and her husband was behind her shaking his head and waving his hands at me and mouthing the words, "SHE'S NOT ALLERGIC, DON'T BELIEVE HER!" It's a new type of insanity that we've got. It's very popular.

Bottom line, if you have Celiac's Disease, it's a thing. If you don't have the disease, it's a neurosis. Just my opinion.

p.s. - I love wheat beer!!

yet Tom, I experience living proof daily, and not just in me but in my whole family, and some friends, where the removal of hormone meat, white or wheat flour, sugars and gluten have had a dramatic impact on all the conditions you list. I would way go this route than give my $ to doctors. You are essentially saying it is all hypochondria. I have to disagree.

And, I actually really like the beer so felt it pertinent to share. I mean Widmer makes great beer and this one is no exception.

If you followed the link and read the results of the study, it will make it clear. If you like the beer, then drink it and enjoy!!

I can read the article but my daily experience must outweigh whatever evidence that article shares. But yes, that beer is very good, just not totally easy to find, however, it is growing in popularity. Try the yellow or the blue....

I'm not a hypochondriac by any stretch but I know first-hand the benefits of cutting down on gluten for me. Since I started paying attention to my own gluten intake, I've totally eliminated the stomach problems that I had before, on a regular basis. We have wonderful appetites and eat good food, and with good sauces, I'll challenge anyone to tell me the pasta would be better if it weren't gluten-free.
We make homemade pizza with gluten-free crust and it's dynamite good, especially when you pay attention to choosing the right wine/beer and creating the perfect salad.!

*Unexpectedly dropping 20 lbs. wasn't hard to handle either. :triumphant:

I don't preach being gluten-free, but I share my own experience with anyone who wants to know how it works....for me. Just like with many things, moderation is the key....not all things, but many things.

Different strokes, etc.

Joe, these are absolutely the same results me and my fam are noticing. Kids allergies have way subsided too. We plan on keeping on.....

Basically wheat husk. I'll probably make someone mad, but like Tom said, unless you have Celiac disease it doesn't hurt you. I've listened to a Doc I used to work for lecture people on how silly the gluten-free thing is a thousand times. Perfectly sane people who trusted this man with their medical needs would go nuts when he told them ts wasn't doing them any good to avoid gluten. I have heard how avoiding it will cure everything from indigestion to dementia, and everything in between. You'll hear people say that they've lost a ton of weight, but it's usually because they stopped eating things with a lot of carbs. "I've lost thirty pounds since going gluten free!" Really? How are you avoiding it? "By not eating pizza!" Well, there you go. Once again, not trying to make anyone mad, and if eating a certain way makes you feel better, then by all means, do it. But for the VAST majority of people, it doesn't do anything.

I agree with this. It's hilarious to go out with some of my friends & have them explain in detail for 10 minutes to the waiter what they (and their kids) can & can't eat. These same people ate normal diets for years with no ill effects...actually, it's a bit annoying.

It's all very similar to the time when it became "in" to be a vegetarian, and the newly-converted were a pain to be around. Keep in mind that some people can be annoying, no matter what propels their respective bandwagons.
Again, in my own experience, I was diagnosed with gluten sensitivity so that's what encouraged me to moderate my intake of gluten, as well as a few other foods that just didn't sit well in my engine room. If it hurts when you do that....don't do it!

I don't preach gluten moderation but I practice it for my health, and I eat and drink very well, thank you. :triumphant:

Hi Tom,

My mother in law had Celiac...gluten was a big no no. My daughter is gluten intolerant, but does not have celiac. She cannot eat gluten without experiencing serious stomach cramps.

I do agree though, that this gluten free craze is just a passing fad. I usually refer to my mood ring to see if i can or can't eat gluten at any given moment. Gotta go...my pet rock needs to go out for a walk.
