Yesterday was my first NGD in more than 4 years... when I took delivery of BeeCee's (Bill) 1982 D-70 as an "early" 65th birthday (early June 2020) or "late" retirement (Jan 2019) gift to myself. Bill's D-70 will join my stable of rosewood dreads, which includes blue and green DV-72s from 1994 and a DV-73 from 1995.
Bill was great to deal with... he patiently put up with with my seemingly endless requests for pictures and measurements... to give you an idea, we first exchanged about a dozen PMs, and then nearly 60 e-mails over two months as we worked out the deal (some of the time was waiting out the winter weather), and it took a couple trys to get the PayPal to go thru. In the end, it worked out great, and my "new" old D-70 arrived safely in yesterdays mail.
I spent the morning doing a preliminary setup. Upon arrival, the treble e action was only 2/64"... much too low for my playing style (bass E was 6/64"). As it turned out, I had a "recycled" Colosi bone saddle that, when dropped in raised the treble e to 4/64" and bass E to 7/64". Not perfect, but I'll play it like this for a month or so, as it gets acclimated to its new home, then see about making some more adjustments.
A few pics (if I can figure out how to post in this new BB software!)...
First impressions: its' gorgeous... the gold hardware combined with maple binding and aged top lacquer give a very "autumn gold" appearance. Tonally, I am quite pleased. I'll post a more detailed comparison with my other rosewood dreads after some playing time.
