Yesterday was my first NGD in more than 4 years... when I took delivery of BeeCee's (Bill) 1982 D-70 as an "early" 65th birthday (early June 2020) or "late" retirement (Jan 2019) gift to myself. Bill's D-70 will join my stable of rosewood dreads, which includes blue and green DV-72s from 1994 and a DV-73 from 1995.

Bill was great to deal with... he patiently put up with with my seemingly endless requests for pictures and measurements... to give you an idea, we first exchanged about a dozen PMs, and then nearly 60 e-mails over two months as we worked out the deal (some of the time was waiting out the winter weather), and it took a couple trys to get the PayPal to go thru. In the end, it worked out great, and my "new" old D-70 arrived safely in yesterdays mail.

I spent the morning doing a preliminary setup. Upon arrival, the treble e action was only 2/64"... much too low for my playing style (bass E was 6/64"). As it turned out, I had a "recycled" Colosi bone saddle that, when dropped in raised the treble e to 4/64" and bass E to 7/64". Not perfect, but I'll play it like this for a month or so, as it gets acclimated to its new home, then see about making some more adjustments.

A few pics (if I can figure out how to post in this new BB software!)...

First impressions: its' gorgeous... the gold hardware combined with maple binding and aged top lacquer give a very "autumn gold" appearance. Tonally, I am quite pleased. I'll post a more detailed comparison with my other rosewood dreads after some playing time.

Oh man, is that ever gorgeous! Major congrats, Dave!

Maple binding, what??? That is really something! And I love those cloud fret markers, ebony fretboard, and of course, abalone rosette! Wow, what a score!

You got a stable full of super nice Guilds. Will you try and give them equal playing time?

The D-70 will get a lot of playing time over the next couple weeks, as I compare it with the three DVs. Those four will then likely get relatively equal playing time, sometimes playing all four in one session, sometimes picking a "dread of the day"... The D-46 and D-35 live in alternate tunings (DADGAD and CGCGCE, respectively). They are not played as often... maybe once a week. I only play one song in CGCGCE, so the D-35 gets the least play time... but it will always be special to me. It was my first Guild, bought when I was 18...

Maple binding, what???
AFAIK, maple binding was found only on a small number of Westerly models, including the D-70/D-80 series in the early 80s, the D-100 series in the late 80s and 90s, and the JF-100 series in the 90s. I first saw it on a JF-100 I had the opportunity to play about 8-9 years go, and thought it was beautiful... In the same session, I first experienced a DV-73.... Look where that single afternoon has lead me!

Do you already know the bracing? I forget if it was included in your research.......
All I know now is that the bracing is scalloped, it has the neck block extension instead of the popsicle brace, and it has the individual braces flanking the sound hole. The "X-ray" view will have to wait until the next string change... but I'll do it eventually....

Hi Dave.
I was just looking as some old Guild catalogs and saw a D-70.
That reminded me of my friend John's JF-100.
Congratulations on your new to you guitar and your related birthday/retirement.

On a side note my custom made guitar may be done sometime in June.
I'm excited to get it.

It was John's DV-73 and JF-100 that started me down this path... Thank him for me!
