Ngd! Now with pics!

Just picked up my new '71 S-90 from the PO. Had a chance to, briefly, plug it in, and, wow, It is definitely a tone monster! Its all original, has the early one piece bridge/tailpiece combo with cover, and the original Guild HB-1s. Its a little dirty and scratched, and definitely needs a new nut (yet still playable with the strings almost on the frets), and came in a TKL SG case that's fits ne'er-too-well, but I am well pleased.
Put it on the scale and it weighs (I kid you not) 6.66 lbs! It is definitely a beast!

I will get pics up in a day or two.

What? A day or 2? I cant wait to hear more about it.
Sorry Dave,
I have a faculty recital tonight (trumpet uke, and my X-170; not in the same piece) and a long day of teaching tomorrow. Gotta pay the man.

Congratulations Chris.
That`s a demonic weight ! I`ve never weighed mine, but I can tell you that it was my first Guild and it is indeed a beast.
I replaced the cheapo tuners and I did away with that bridge/tailpiece combo. It intonates and plays much better now.
I also replaced the HB1`s with Lace Sensor Wino signature humbuckers, they sound awesome !!
I`ll try and get some recent pics up soon( I didn`t want to hijack your thread )
We should start a S-90 owners roster.
Cheers

Congratulations Chris. The S-90 is a no frills rock machine and was my first introduction to Guild solid body electrics with the famed HB-1s (courtesy of hagmeat, who I had not previously met, who let a stranger come over & play his guitar). I am sure you will love it. I have 4 (what am I thinking!!) S-100s, otherwise I would also be tempted with an S-90 - just a such a "pure" guitar in many ways.

Which brings me to hagmeat's S-90 above with the upgrades. I'll be interested to try that guitar again. I'm not sure if the Wino pickups will be to my taste (as I am a huge fan of HB-1s) but I''d s like to check it out one day.

Anytime mate, just give me a yell and I'll bring it over.
I reckon you'll like the Wino pickups, but not as much
as you like the HB1's. Both are great pickups,
but certainly different beasts.

Here`s the demo demonstrated by the man himself - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI3A7b0V6Ew

Had a chance to clean it up a bit last night with some orange oil, which also helped to diminish the light colored scratches. I opened up the control cavity, and the CTS pots are dated the 20th week of 1980, so they have been worked on (but work beautifully.) When I change strings I'll check under the pups.
Luckily I had a spare case hanging around so I could get it out of that too, too, tight SG case.
And now, the pics:

That's an interesting bridge! I assume you can't adjust intonation.. can you set the height at least?
Yes, those two screws can adjust the height. So far, with 10s and a wound G, I haven't heard any intonation issues. (I can always do what Townshend did with his SG's wraparound bridge: pull the neck back to bring the B string in.)

They only used these bridges (which were from the early S-50s) for the first couple of years, then they went to the S-100 setup.

Bending a wound 3rd is hard work - difficult to get a 2 step bend happening! If the theory about n moving parts holds true that bridge shoulf provide some positive tone benefits. How noticeable that would be, especially in a band situation, is probably dependent om how good your ears are (or maybe on how much you want to hear the improvement :friendly_wink:). Makes some sense though.

nice one Chris! is this the result of the strat trade? u came out on top of that one my friend! congrats and enjoy!

love the 60s Jetstar bridge on there by the way. I do not have any intonation issues with mine (65 jetstar). I do not mind the chunkyness and location of the bridge, its ok as far as playing even though my hand tends to hit it or wants to rest there...its just that its condition is so nice and shiny/chrome that I do not want to tarnish it. but alas, eventually I shall do just that.

hows the neck on yours, chunky monkey or slim pickin?
