The top color will darken eventually when exposed to UV light... if you plan on keeping this one for some years. The satin finish is very thin, seems like a lot of work to stain it in the traditional way, which I think would involve stripping the finish first. I used gel stain on the back of my D-40 after finishing with tru-oil, and I liked the results. Gel stain can go on top of finish with just a light sanding. But a lot of work! Took a lot of coats of the gel stain to get the red I wanted. Then I had to go back over it with tru-oil. I don't think I'd attempt this on the top of a guitar, personally, and not on an otherwise great sounding Martin, without maybe practicing on a beater. I was fixing a very bad refin on my D-40 which is why I didn't mind trying it on that guitar.
Jfilm, I have been reading about gel stains. I would definitely practice on another piece of wood. Maybe get a piece of spruce and work it that way. Then again I may not do a damn thing. I have a tendency to come up with grand ideas and then nothing. For sure I will swap pickguard and glue down binding at that waist - probably in pretty short order. It really is a nice inexpensive Martin. It reminds a lot of a D-15. Just simple solid woods - nothing fancy. Except of course the spruce is more lively. It also kind of reminds of the D-4 I owned for a few years. Fisher Price: My First Guild. Which is a good thing. I wish I still had it.

Man, I am digging this guitar a lot. I think I like this neck more than any of my Guild necks.. Granted I have not dug into the F47M yet ( waiting until xmas ) so not a full on comparison. I am just really enjoying this pleasant surprise trade. It has been 5 or 6 years since I have owned a Martin and I am loving this one.

I will always liked Martin dreads, made in Nazareth. I have owned 3 in my time, and wish I still had 1 of them. Nice score!

Yeah wood it is just a real lively guitar - lightweight with lots of response. I see why people love Martin. I have been fingerpicking some xmas music on it and it has just provided lots of enjoyment.

Buddy of mine has an HD 28, binding on lower bout came loose a year ago. Now the top.....I told him he shuda bought a Guild.

Thrilled for you that you're enjoying that guitar. The quality to price ratio is off the charts.
