Been looking for one of these for a while, they're pretty scarce, especially in sunburst. This one popped up on Reverb a week ago, being sold by Tone Shop in the Dallas area. Made a quick call and spoke to a very helpful staffer who said that the guitar appeared to be unplayed. The price was reasonable, so I bought it.

It really is "like new." Not a scratch on the guitar or the case. It's got brand-new strings on it, and I think the bridge pins have been switched to ebony (which is good, I would have done it anyway). Fit and finish are outstanding. Very nice straight-grained African mahogany on the back.

It sounded very good on the first day, kind of crappy on the second day, but glorious today. It must be trying to get used to the cool & dry High Rockies after the heat and humidity of Dallas. Plays very nice, although the neck could use a slight tweak. I'll wait on that, and put some Elixirs or Stringjoys on it in a week or two.

My only complaint? The darn thing is too shiny and new! I don't think I've had a brand-new (even though it's a 2021) guitar since my first one in 1974! I've always preferred guitars with a few miles on them. How's that for a first-world problem?

The best part? The neck feels pretty much exactly like the neck on my old D-46, which I love. They both have a 1 11/16" nut, but lots of "meat on the bone" underneath. It is not a slender neck by any means.

Check it out!

HNGD! Wow that is stunning, nice score. Was that a leftover never bought, or a return? Either way, you gotta love when people take care of their instruments and you can get a clean one that has some miles on it. That one looks like all the mileage will be put on by you! Enjoy. It sure does look sweet next to your D46.

Beautiful Ken! Love the burst. I bet it does make a nice complement to your D46.

Wow! I’ve got a Tacoma D40 Bluegrass Jubilee and I always wanted try playing one of the newer traditional models. They have the original dovetail neck joint and red spruce scalloped bracing, plus a higher grade Sitka spruce top than the standard if I remember. Gotta be a wonderful sound!

Thanks, William! Good to know that nice old D-50 found a good home. It was a heckuva guitar.

You'll notice it remains in my photo just to the left. And now I have another Guild in sunburst; I like to have at least one SB guitar around.

I hope you all do realize, I'm "shopping" in your signatures! LOL. :)
Preacher Bob, let me give me you hand with some of the Guilds you've got.
They're heavy!
Head over to the for sale section, he’s got a couple available (y)

Wow that's awesome, an amazing guitar. I've owned mine since October 2020, it continually blows my mind, I barely touch my other guitars ever.

I felt strange with a new Martin Custom 00 15 when I bought it. Still do, as the rest of my stash is pretty well worn. I don't let it hamper it's use though. How else was I going to get the exact guitar I wanted. It was a deal gone bad special order, so I lucked out big time.

I finally got to sit down with this guitar last night for an hour after a week of being either too busy or out-of-town. I think it has acclimated a bit, and the new strings are losing their "zing." Anyway, I loved playing it and it sounded great. It still needs different strings (I'll start with Elixir PB Lights), and I'll take a bit off the bottom of the saddle just to get it zeroed in a bit more.

I don't usually care for gloss finish on a neck. In fact, several years ago I sold a very cool DCE-5 that I gigged with just because it had a thick gloss finished neck. But the gloss on this one (nitrocellulose, I think...) is very thin and smooth and does not bother me a bit. And, as mentioned above, the neck feels just like my '81, which I love. It is just on the chunky side of medium. Perfect.

I have seen a few D-40's on the verb lately that were very tempting. Such a classic recipe and a excellent companion Guild to your D-46. Yours is a beaut with that burst and I hope you enjoy your Oxnard build as I much as I have enjoyed mine!

I’ve got the plain-Jane natural top D40 T and all the platitudes are spot on. These guitars are phenomenal indeed. I think they’ve found the right formula. The neck is about as perfect as I’ve ever played.
A big congratulations on your great looking sunburst model.

Plain Jane is no biggie when the right ingredients are at play. My D-35 - other than the burst top - is the definition of plain jane. Man it scratches an itch. I bet that D-40 sounds amazing.

It sounds like you two "lovebirds" are living happily ever after... As it should be. :)
