NGD: D35

I took delivery of this beautiful specimen yesterday. Serial number says 1982, neck block stamped Sept. 15, 1981. I can’t believe how clean this guitar is considering it’s 40 years old. Only some light pick scuffing. No cracks, no dings, no checking. It must have been under somebody’s bed. The frets were green and tarnished so I cleaned those up and did a setup and now she plays great with plenty of saddle still left.

Nice looking guitar! Can someone school me, I must have been sleeping at the time it was explained...is this an upgraded
D25-type or is it an "downgraded" D40? Spruce/mahogany, right? Arched back or no? Changes in bracing that go unseen?

Early D 25s were flat back and mahogany topped, so I think the D 35 originally was a spruce top version. They share the same three on a strip tuners. When the D 25 got an arch back, that was the big different feature, as both by then had spruce tops. You can look at it either way. It was meant to fill a price slot in the line. I like mine, and the new four plus times the price mahogany back, spruce top guitar I just bought will not replace it. I was worried, but the joys of my D 35 are still there.

I always figured it for a plain jane D40 but I guess it could go either way.

It's a plain jane D-40, as the D-25 didn't have a Spruce top til later. By the time you put a Spruce top on a D25, like Dread's or the '78 I had, it is essentially a D35. The '78 D25 I had was a cannon compared to my '73 D35.

So...the B string tuner is real stiff and hard to turn. Any tips on how to loosen it up? Is the cover that encloses the gears removable?
