I was recently tasting beer at a party and within the 4 or 5 people in my immediate area somehow a discussion on rock drummers came up.
I mentioned my list of top 5 rock drummers would include Ringo Starr.
You would have thought a bomb went off. I was trashed, smashed, and laughed at.
About an hour later after the dust settled, a guy approaches me and says "I think you are right." I said "About Ringo?" he said "Yeah, just listen to "Drive my Car." http://youtu.be/8Ts2U1mkfz4
I smiled and said "You must play drums." He said "NO....I play bass. But ask any bassist, and he'll tell you who the good drummers are."
Disclaimer: This is my opinion and my ears only, and we all know what that's worth.
My top 5: Not in any order. John Bonham. Artimus Pyle, Ringo Starr, Steve Gadd and Rick Marlotta (both early 70's "studio musicians" that played with Steely Dan)
I can hear the laughs......
