I was recently tasting beer at a party and within the 4 or 5 people in my immediate area somehow a discussion on rock drummers came up.
I mentioned my list of top 5 rock drummers would include Ringo Starr.

You would have thought a bomb went off. I was trashed, smashed, and laughed at.

About an hour later after the dust settled, a guy approaches me and says "I think you are right." I said "About Ringo?" he said "Yeah, just listen to "Drive my Car." http://youtu.be/8Ts2U1mkfz4
I smiled and said "You must play drums." He said "NO....I play bass. But ask any bassist, and he'll tell you who the good drummers are."

Disclaimer: This is my opinion and my ears only, and we all know what that's worth.

My top 5: Not in any order. John Bonham. Artimus Pyle, Ringo Starr, Steve Gadd and Rick Marlotta (both early 70's "studio musicians" that played with Steely Dan)

I can hear the laughs......

I agree about Ringo. Certainly not flashy but solid and perfect for the Fab's music.

The other four: John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon and Buddy Rich.

With the possible exception of Bonham, these guys all have some jazz influences and can play with finesse and grace. Drummers who hold their sticks like war clubs and destroy drum kits generally don't impress me.

Forgot Charlie, I'll never forgive my self, and this guy, Brady Blade running a close 6th:

He doesnt get introduced until 4:45 (sorry)and then doesn't really get warmed up until the hat comes off!
And a back-up singer named Emmy Lou (my top 5 female voice) and Daniel is no slouch on the steels. Who am I kidding this is a sweet video.

As a paid drummer, I was told many times by my fellow band members that Charlie Watts & Ringo Starr were A-OK, and just exactly what their band needed for the musical style.

Also in our debates most bass & guitar men stated they preferred not to hear hardly any John Bonham sounding garbage can, thumpy sounding licks. You know cuz of the 26" bass, deep snare, oversized mounted & floor toms, and thick cymbols.

My vote is based on who I liked, both skillful and tasty, and I espired to emulated:
1. Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix)
2. Michael Shrieve (Santana)
3. Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck)
4. Butch Trux (Allman Brothers- we played lots of Allman songs)
5. Terry Bozzio (70's Frank Zappa)

Its unbelievable to me that most audio phyles I know did like Ringo "He played just the right stuff at the right time" they say.

But hey, I came up on the other side of the tracks, not attempting to play guitar until after several years behind drums.

Ringo Starr - underappreciated. He did his job, and he did it well.

John Bonham! Monster.

Ginger Baker. :)

Larry Mullen Jr!! (Just had to throw that one in there...)

No reason to laugh at Ringo, he did his job well in one of the most important bands ever.
However, he is not among the top 5 rock drummers I like to listen to.

In no particular order:
Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake and Palmer)
John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
Mike Shrieve (Santana)
Christian Vander (Magma)
Terry Bozzio (Zappa)

Steve Gadd (Way ahead of the game IMO)
Carmine Appice
Narada Michael Walden
Terry Bozzio
And since the OP made the "Rock" mention: Ian Paice! :D

But you're right Beinhard, Vander is a monster too....

Easy there, don't bust a bloodvessel! I was the same when I first saw him - uncontrollable laughter
He's got more moves than...I don't know, something with a lot of moves.
That is one coverband and go and see just to watch the drummer!

Yeah, this guy reminds me of our late Chris Farley.... They should hire him for SNL. Hilarious.

Saturday Night Live, sorry..... This TV comedy show is an institution in the US, and gave birth to scores of comedians and actors thru the years.

I uncovered this on the net...A top 500 drummers list. And wouldn't you know it; my guy Artimus Pyle didn't make the list.

And no one including myself mentioned this guy:

Carlos Vega (RIP) http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Carlos_Vega.html

You'll see the list of 500 on the left hand side. You can click on the red-highlighted drummers for a video treat.

Gotta go practice my triplets.....
