Suppose it is meant to fix anything - like Jesus.
Not one to blaspheme myself unless absolutely needed, but there's a similar occurence in mechanical parlance with a springy carburetor clip almost too small be seen with naked eye are/were generally referred to as Jesus clips, and if you're asking someone why they call it that, it's only because you haven't attempted to remove one yourself yet, they have a tendency to fly, followed by a tendency of never being found again.

I will take my pedantic moment and observe "Duck Tape" is a brand of duct tape.

Cue up discussion of "Xerox copy" or "Kleenex tissue" and how the brand name became a generic name for something.
Except.... "duck tape" was a generic term prior to the existence of the Duck Tape company, which took its name from the existing generic usage.

History of the Manco Co, which created the "Duck Tape" brand:

From the above link:
"According to Manco and other sources, duct tape was among the many breakthrough products developed during World War II. Created by a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, the material featured a cloth base coated with rubberized adhesive on one side and an army green polymer coating on the other. The resulting tape was strong, but its cloth base made it easy to tear to size. Soldiers found the material indispensable, and used it to seal ammunition boxes and repair everything from jeeps to battleships. The duct tape moniker developed after the war, when the reinforced, waterproof adhesive was widely used to repair and connect duct work."

"Instead of trying to correct the many consumers who mispronounced and misspelled the name of his product, Kahl embraced "duck tape" and registered it as a trademark."

I was pleasantly surprised the prices of Revox gear is not outlandish at all, should you want the real thing.

Before I quitted working on tape recorders for 50 years about two years ago - I was selling a fully functional A77 w factory specs w 3 months warranty - parts and labour - starting at 350€ - depending on cosmetics and other details. PR99 starting at 700€ . . .

They are fine machines - built on cast-aluminum frame w three motors - and very service-friendly.

Did I mention it before - I used to work at Studer-ReVox - even got to meet and have a short discussion w Herr Doktor Willi Studer.

Such fine company back then 😍 🎼 🐾

Oddly enough in the military (Army at least), it was referred to as "100-mile-an-hour" tape...... I mean, why use 2 syllables when 6 will do nicely.

In aviation it is called "speed tape" - adhesive-backed aluminum tape good to 600 mph. Next time you're seated over the wing and notice some (as I have), take comfort that it is not duct tape. It's speed tape.

I keep some pre-cut pieces of heavy duty duct tape in the car in case I have reattach body panels after an "unfortunate incident".

Oh! Dear Daevid!!"Want a cup of tea?"
I loved Gong and saw them several times in Orleans way back when, well, at least I can remember the beginnings of their concerts!
Under the hippy-trippy paraphernalia, they where a very tight band, fantastic drumming by Pierre Moerlen and great guitar licks by Steve Hillage -(before he eventually became "Steve Hillage")..."You" and "Angel's egg"I still enjoy today. Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful, like the man said....
