What an album.

Some gal gave me and some other hooligans a ride into town when we were teens, kept saying "you guys are so heavy, my car is really struggling"... when we got to town, smoke was rolling out of her back wheelwells, her E brake was on apparently. We bailed out, it was awful.

Can you smell that smell? ;]]

Wow, Pontiac's OHC 6!
:)

Did you know that Chrysler wanted to unveil a DOHC Hemi V6 in 1951 - to replace the flathead, wow - but it was way too expensive and too far ahead of its time. Makes you wonder if the Chrysler engineers got into the ergot, if you know what I mean, and I know you do ;]

I did not know that!
....but I've been meaning to give Chrysler their due when it comes to engineering too, although the first mass production OHV V8 was actually the Olds Rocket ;) *

The inspiration for "Rocket 88"

So Chrysler was playing a bit of catch-up, but the V-6 thing...hmmmm....that didn't hit mass production until the Buick "Fireball" in '62, itself derived from their 215 V8...and I always thought that was the first until I caught this detail on Wiki:
GMC "Twin Six" heavy duty engine 702 cu in (11.5 L)
560px-1960_GMC_V12_702cid.JPG

introduced in '59, got a suspicion you know the family.

So maybe those Chrysler engineers were onto something, just didn't pan out, but wonder if it pointed em down the road to the legendary Slant-6?

Could get a factory 4-barrel accompanied by a couple of other tweaks, but you knew that, didn'tcha?
But I'd say one of my all-time favorites is the '63 Turbine Car

* Edit: Just realized you said DOHC V6... and I convoluted it to "OHV (as opposed to flathead)"...got it now. Yep, pretty revolutionary for that time!

Reminds me of the '62 Corvair Monza I learned to drive in, 4-on-the-floor, it could get rubber in the first three gears. Damn Ralph Nader!

With turbocharged flat-6, torque to the moon.

Porsche who? 😃

Speaking of the Monza GT concept, never let a set of beautiful lines go to waste.

John DeLorean's attempt to sneak a Pontiac "Corvette Killer" into production; :ROFLMAO:; axed by GM for what appear to be obvious reasons.
That one ran an HO Sprint 6 engine as well. :)

So Johnny had to content himself with Firebird development, before being awarded stewardship of the Vega program.
The Vega chassis ultimately begat the Monza Mirage, btw:

When I had my '75 Monza Town Coupe with lowly Vega-derived 4-banger but lovely Borg Warner T50 5 speed, I actually lusted after the '76 Sport Coupe's front end, and it came with a V-6 and suspension upgrade:

Then graft on the spoiler from the '77 Pontiac Sunbird Formula (hey remember, these were desperate days for GM 😃)

At the time a '72 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV cost about as much as the Monza. I lusrted after one of those, too:

Two years ago, at 66 years old I bought my first car with an automatic since my first car in 1970. I've owned trucks with autos, but all my cars (even a Chevy Blazer) had manual transmissions. The new 10 speed auto in my 2018 Mustang is amazing. They run faster than the manual and with paddles I can get engine braking as necessary.

Slightly unrelated but in the same vein, I'm driving home a couple years ago and a guy up by the grain elevators had pulled a pretty cherry SAAB Sonnet from his garage, hadn't been licensed since the 70's. Damn I wanted that car but smartly did not pursue it. Probably worth a lot more than I would pay anyway.

As a welder I worked with a pipe fitter with a SAAB like the one pulled out of the garage by a grain elevator. He didn't last long. Got fired for kicking the vending machine and breaking it's glass when it took his money.
The geezers said it deserved him right because of the car he drove! The geezers didn't like people who drive Datsun's either! LOL!

Oh yeah..... Those were big time in 70's Europe.
And the Manta:

And the Commodore:

A buddy of mine had one of these (well, his father did) and I remember some crazy miles in this car, still wondering how we made it alive today.
This inline 6 had some impressive muscles.

Impressive. Are you saying you have or had that one, or was affiliated with it in some way?
