Kiss the Cod for me John!
i'll have to find one first, Graham - most of the world's major fisheries have been whacked by rapacious humans, but the cod may be the worst of all. From a situation 400 years ago where Basque fishermen were sailing to Newfoundland to haul them up in wicker baskets, to today where they're almost all gone.

John Nightingale, head of the Vancouver Aquarium and a world-renowned ocean biologist, told me a few years ago that someone had asked him how long it would take for the cod to return, given that there is now no fishery. He answered that it might take a thousand years, if ever. "Niches in ecosystems don't stay empty, so it's not as if there's a vacuum where the cod used to be - they've been replaced, of course, largely by jellyfish." Now we're hearing about jellyfish explosions in all the oceans.

And no, I will not kiss a jellyfish for you. I mean, I like you and all, but . . .

About 10 years ago we were vacationing in Nova Scotia. There seemed to be a proliferation of jellyfish washed up on the shore of the beaches near Liverpool.

My very active 8 year old, at the time, daughter was bounding down the beach and promptly ran through a jellyfish.

The scream that she emitted was akin to Jamie Lee Curits in the Original Halloween movie. You guys know the one, the scream that all young girls inherit from their moms.

Anyway she settled down after a couple of hours or reassurance that she wasn't going to die that weekend unless her Dad intentionally drove the van into the sea with them all aboard or he decided to hack them up in their sleep, you know, fatherly reassurance stuff.

At breakfast the next morning I told her to rush to the buffet as they were running low on Peanut Butter and Jellyfish sandwiches. :D

Did you guys know that even 8 year olds have that "I hate your F'ing guts look when they need it?"

Have a good time John, it's one Province I have yet to get to, but will within the next 5 years!

You guys are makin' me hungry!

I was introduced to Dungeness Crab when I lived on Whidbey Island, my friend had a pile of 'em steamed in a pot and dumped out on the picnic table, and several cases of cold beer. I ate 15 of them :D

Yes sir. After we left they had enough $$ to buy a new sign! A tad bit fancier than the old one. They now have one up on Frank's Burger Den nextdoor...

Lots of good fun out there! I had Dungeness crab on Monday, BTW.
Yum!

Food is always a good topic as far as I'm concerned. I would love to get regional recipes from this board or just personal favourites/techniques.

Food is essential for proper GASsification. I grew up in Cajun country where food literally ruled, and I've had the pleasure of finding great food everywhere between here and there.
That platter of crawfish in front of you in Hancock, TX had my mouth watering, by the way.

That was a very kewl Cajun boil that we shared with the Scratch's. Nothing like crawfish, shrimp, sausage, potatoes and buttery corn to clog the arteries is there?

And a washtub bass just for kicks.

I tried to get one going a couple of years ago. I'd like to get it started again, possibly as it's own thread. I'm sure between us all we can put together an LTG recipe book.
