keep my guild f212xl(1973) tuned down 1 1/2 steps. i put it in c# standard last night and i love this tuning. my string guage is lights .10-.47, so this is really low in tension on neck, but need i be worried about the neck falling off from too low tension?

thanks!

Hi Woodie; no, less-than-standard string tension will not cause the instrument's neck to fall off; nor will it induce 'back-bow' because it has too little tension imposed on it by the strings. But low string tension has been scientifically associated with intensified BO, so caution is in order...

Ya loving the 12'er, are ya? Did you post some pics?

I am loving it CJ, and now that i stumbled upon the 3 half step drop, it is easy to play and i like the low slack sound. after all, i am kind of a slacker at heart.....

re GAS, my wife has ruled that out for me, based on the crazy GAS i have had the past 18 months. she said if i want a 6 string Guild D-40, i am to just string up the F212XL with 6 strings instead of 12, or i can sleep outside in my truck for a few months.....so i plan to just happily play my guild 12 string in C# standard, stay warm.....

a little S-10 chevy Graham, not near big enough to sleep in, but i see your point. a new D-40 would be worth a far worse consequence I am sure....

So long as it doesn't induce a bad case of intense GAS

Suggestion: Buy your wife a D-40 as an early Christmas present.
Yes, and finance it by selling her Gibson out from under her ... if she objects, tell her to sleep in the truck - c'mon, we men or mice here?

amen to that brother....she is a very resonable woman...i am the crazy dude with the GAS. and now that i finally came around to Guild, now that i have finally woke up, GAS is tough to hide under the carpet. i like the idea re buying her a D-40 for x-mas, but she loves her Gibby J-45,and would never let it go.....all is good. but one day, mark my words, i will own a D-40. one day....

Both of mine are sporting the same approx. tension as one @ concert pitch and both are still fine after 17 and 19 years...so tuning that low will certainly cause no harm.

I keep the 12 a half step down (Eb), the D-35 a whole step down, (dropped standard in D) the M-20 in DADGAD, and the Martin in double dropped D (Dmodal).

How's that wrist doing, Woody?

For -3 tuning you could go from .011 and .012 down to about .050. You could possibly have better tone and still stay within your comfort range. Despite what was said in a previous post I would monitor the neck very carefully and be ready to put those dual truss rods to work if I were tuning standard lights to -3.

Your neck won't fall off but if you fart like an English girl your pants might.

Woody,
I keep heavy duty Guild 12s in 'E' concert and mahogony axes in 'D'. Just a personal habit, I guess. I never could really sing, but I know that as I get older (and older) I can't reach the 'E' concert range and 'D' works better. I just capo up a couple if it suits the tune... My Epiphone FT 160 12 Texan caved in to concert tuning and, unfortunately, neglect, so I've become a bit cautious. Cant help but think; however, that any heavy Guild with dual trusses can handle concert tuning without worry, unless neglected for months at a time. My 2 cent opinion only...

concert D seems to be a good compromise between driving the top enough to get a good old guild 12 tone and being easy to play. the C#, though fun, was a bit soupy....
