Are those dimarzios? I thought guild actually made some pickups like that in the 80's, but there is a good chance i am wrong.

hey hans,

so the configuration of the sf4 is original?

Yup ....... except for the replacement knobs!

Here's what the model looked like in the catalog:

Back when I was in young and poor mode, one of my local music store had a BLACK SPARKLE SF4.

I still get tingles thinking about it.

So mystery solved. Thanks guys. (great pics from the 80's catalogure, Hans).

And the hero gets the girl ...wait, that's from my dream last night....

On the pickups: can anyone comment on the tone those optional DiMarzios produce when compared to the more common Guild humbuckers?

...and of course the dollar$$ and sense (or lack thereof) question: how much should one pay for a sweet thing like this '84 Starfire 4?

Condition is very good, for a 20+ year old instrument.

It's not completely original (knobs, pickguard missing with screw-holes filled), but appears to be close.

Some "special' features" (or at least special compared to earlier or later SF4's) ...gold hardware, master volume knob, DiMarzios?

And she sure is pretty, with that cool colour/finish!

By the polepieces, I'd say you could have original HB-1s with the covers removed. On the other hand, it looks as though the mounting rings have been modified to accept the tilt screws. I'd hold the jury on the pickups until you could see the underside...

Thanks guys ..."you're the inspiration" is ringing in my ears.

(o.k., Chicago produced some pretty sappy songs in the '80's, but that's what was playing on my car radio)

I bought the Starfire IV.

I'll let you know the final verdict on the pretty girl when the lovely redhead arrives. Or is she maroon or magenta? ...wine? ...burgundy or claret? ...crimson? ...o.k., I'm excited. Always am when I pull the trigger and buy a guitar!

Thanks for all of your clever detective work and good natured guidance. The reign of the semi-hollowbody begins!

Congratulations.
Probably not a redhead. There is a particular red associated with Starfires and that ain't it. I'm guessing the three letters that started with W on the label stand for Walnut which I would unimaginatively call brown and none of the supported font colors seem to match :)

Brown Eyed Girl?
Brown Sugar?
Rose of Alabama? ("O'l brown Rosie. Rose of Alabamee. The sweet tobacco posey is the rose of Alabamee").

Ah shucks ...didn't Hans say they had 'special finishes' back in the early '80's?
