Part 3 F112

My first "good guitar" a 1971 model I bought in 1973 when I was in high school.
[IMG:600:800]http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/earlknoob_/100_1247.jpg[/img][IMG:600:800]http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/earlknoob_/100_1250.jpg[/img]

I was always going to replace the tuners, but never got around to it.

Still has the sticker from the long gone shop I bought it from in Tempe, AZ (the Music Spot, Broadway & Mill Ave).

A couple of weeks after I bought it, one of the local "celebrity" pickers was in the shop asking "You sold that F112? What was cool guitar! It had to great sound. Who bought it?" "some punk kid..." "Wow! He's got a a cool little axe. He's better hang on to it..."

So I did.

Lonesome Picker:

Those guitars of yours sure look sweeeeet. I jam with a guy that has an F55R and and its amazing how different (but equally great) his guitar sounds next to my D55. Together, they sound incredible. I would love to own a F55 or an F512 some day. My suggestion to you is to go get yourself a D55 ASAP!!

Vox in the background to an AC30CC2 with the Warfdale speakers - couldn't see the extra $$$ for the Celestians. An acoustic sounds pretty awesome through it although it's main reason for existance is for my Gretsch 6122-62, 6128-57TSP, and my Rickenbacker 360-12V64.

Picker,

That was me that asked for the pictures of the GF55. Great looking family of Guilds you have there. Looks like the GF55 is the same basic guitar as the JF55, just a little smaller. Nice axe.

I get to play a get together tonight that we've never done before. At this jam session there will be some young guys (20's and 30's) that mine are the first and only Guild they've seen or heard. They are in awe of them. There will also be some young guys there who have heard about mine, but never seen or heard a Guild. My biggest dilemma is deciding which ones to take. I always love to introduce these young guys, who have never seen or heard one, to Guild! :D They all think Martin and Taylor are where it's at until they play a Guild........................this is fun stuff.

I think you have to take one of the 55s there West. If the blemish isn't too bad on the new one take it, the burst will probably blow them away. And maybe the 25 just for the heck of it. Show them that the "basic" Guild is also a monster tamer.

Have a blast West.

Well, in fact that's exactly what I was thinking. Nothing wrong with the new/old D55, just got a little ding. It's also one of those, well you know how you can take 2 guitars of the same make and model and one's got it and the other doesn't, well the sunburst D55 has definately got it.

Something like this I usually do take the D25, but she needs a set of strings (I do have a couple of spare sets laying around), but I think I'm about ready to change a few things on her. I'm considering a bone saddle and pins, maybe a nut.

I might take both D55s and the 12. One of the guys that will be there tonight plays a Takahoochie 12. I'd really like for him to play the JF30 :D . That's big beautiful sucker sounds like an orchestra.

I'm telling ya, the last time I got together with a couple of these guys, they never opened their own guitar cases. It doesn't get any better than that. They touched the DV72 and DV73 with almost a reverence. It's fun to watch their expressions and be with people who appreciate your collection, but most of all it is fun to gain converts to Guild guitars, especially those Taylor and Martin lovers.

It is interesting, isn't it.

When I'm out with a bunch of players, I now always bring the GF-60R and often the X-400, even when I'm planning to play mostly the M-20. The number of friends who ask me if they can "play my Guild", or who put down their guitars at the first opportunity to pick up the GF-60 or the X-box amazes me.

We're fortunate to have these great instruments, and it's always a pleasure to share them with others. I can hardly wait till I take the Nightbird out as well.

JF is a true jumbo, a very large heavy guitar, the GF is a, well for lack of a better term, mini-jumbo. I've always gotten a kick out of that term, quite the oxymoron, but used frequently. They are the same shape, but the GF is smaller. In fact, I think Picker's picture compares the two side by side. Both outstanding guitars.

Yes John, I agree it gives us a great sense of pride, but when you get to answer questions like, "How much do they cost" by a Taylor owner, and your answer brings this perplexed look that screams..."Man, I got screwed", it is gratifying.

Those young guys that aren't familiar with Guild are the msot fun to me. Even some older guys like 82 year old Mr. Waldron that I play with, had heard of Guild, but never seen or played one. He just loves them.

Yes John, it is a blessing to be able to share these fine instruments of old world craftsmanship and quality.

I am afraid we've hijacked Picker's thread.

Thanks West.

So then, I have only briefly played a JF model. To me, and again it was brief, it felt awkward. Perhaps because it was rather large. Maybe I should try a GF?

I am a bluegrass picker and its a fact that Martin owns the Bluegrass world as far as guitars go. It always amazes me that these die-hard Martin guys will go out of their way to admire any Guild that I bring to a jam session. I always ask why they are playing a Martin if they like Guild so much. The "rules" say you have to play a Martin in Bluegrass. Fender does not yet realize the tremendous sales potential it has with Guild. EVERY guitar player likes them and I'm intrigued that Fender doesn't put five of them in every music store across the country.

A "JF" is the modern name for the old "F" series jumbo (F50, F512 etc). A JF is 17" across the bass bout.

A "GF" is a moniker from the "Gruhn" era. These are "mini jumbos" that are proportioned the same as a "regular jumbo" but are only 16" across the bass bout.

I really like the GF size. It's big enough to make some serious noise, but still has a nice initimate feel. The different size gives it a different EQ with a tad more mid-range which lets it cut thorough when played with a jumbo or a dred.

Came home from work last night and the wife informed me "that big blond guitar upstairs is pissed off because you posted pics of her cousins but not her..."

So to keep peace in the family, I present to you my 1971 F412:

[IMG:320:240]http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/earlknoob_/100_1307.jpg[/img]
I got the F412 in the mid 1990's I was actually looking for a Taylor 12 (I know...."forgive me Lord for I have sinned...." But I saw this old gal on the wall and was comletely blown away with it's sound. It's a CANNON. Original case too.[IMG:240:320]http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/earlknoob_/100_1292.jpg[/img]
As you can see from the worn finish the original owner played the hell out of it - which is probably why is sounds so great now. Lots of dings and a few finish cracks - plenty of "character". Nowadays you spend big $$ for this kind of "relic-ing".

Love those Guild 12-string headstocks![IMG:320:240]http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b388/earlknoob_/100_1297.jpg[/img]
It's had some major repairs done to it - a neck re-set and bridge repair. The bridge has a crack across the lower pin holes. It appears to be stable and hasn't grown any. Of note is the bridge is rosewood. I would have expected a F412 to have an ebony bridge.

stay tuned for F412 part 2
