I guess the easiest way to pronounce "Navarre" is F-50!

Thanks to all for clearing that up!

Hi Dennis: since here in the Beaver Lodge we type instead of speak, it hardly matters how the word is spoken anyway. But just to pull the chain one more time, you might want to edit the title of this thread; on my PC, it reads 'Nararre' ... funny how everybody knew what was intended anyway ... besides, since this is a running F50/Nav-word thread, so I thought I'd post that ebay listing here. Best wishes, J

:) Also, Navarre is vague... E.g., do you mean the rosewood version or the maple version. At first there was only the maple, but that's long since been muddied.

Of course, product model names aren't vague but they're no end of confusion either. I mean, an F-50 is a JF-65... Those guys (probably Gruhn in particular) should be spanked for doing that. His vintage pricing guide tries to justify the changes he made in the names, but frankly all he did was make it more confusing. My opinion, FWIW. :)

I was complaining to someone on the AGF recently about how ridiculous Martin has been with the product numbers. Really, you've got designations for slothead, shaved braces, relocated braces, herringbone trim, tuners, etc. etc.... all within one "style" number. It's ridiculous. But is it worse than Guild -- well, maybe not. :)

Chazmo,

According to Hans' book, Navarre is both the rosewood and maple versions of the F-50.
It seems that these names are just "nicknames" to the model numbers we already know at first sight.

Like, the M-20 is actually called the "Economy", and the M-30 is the "Del Rio"! Pretty fancy names . . . sounds good, I guess.

How's this sound:
"Hey, there's a "Economy" on Ebay right now, going for $1,200! Here 's the link ____" !

I'm glad Guild went back to the regular F-50, F-40, etc numbers.

Martin has SO many guitars out there, that yes, it gets confusing what with all the designation numbers. It seems they have to have a custom department that is half the size of the regular factory just to keep up with all the different guitars.
I guess that is a contributing factor to their success.

The word being of spanish origin I would pronounce it as such: Nah-varr-eh with the emphasis on "varr". That E is definately not silent, as I believe there are no silent Es in spanish.
Well, by golly, you may be right. In Spanish the word is "navarra", not "navarre" as it is in french.

I was thinking only of Henry of Navarre, the Hugenot (protestant) King of (the french province of) Navarre, who later became king of all France.

Perhaps, after all, "F-50" is truly simpler.

Hi Jonas; the word 'Navarra' is Spanish ... the word 'Navarre' is the name of a province in France taking its name from a historical area formerly spanning the French-Spanish border. Considering that the F30 was called the Aragon, a region of Spain, arguably the F50 would continue the Spanish-flavored names maybe out of respect to the 'Spanish' guitar (not to be confused with the Bulgarian guitar). Except that Guild apparently chose the French - not the Spanish - spelling of the word ... and since we are typing and not speaking ....

Cheers! J
