Welcome to LTG! You're getting it right from the horse's mouth in the next post. Do you have a photo you can post? We love photos here.
Hello Christr,

Welcome! Your Guild D-40 with serial # DD400960 was completed during the year 1999.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks Hans. This is one of the last D40s produced I think? I thought they were discontinued around this time for a while.

'98 or 9 was the "comeback" year after being on hiatus for several years; the flatbackhogbodysprucetop niche was filled by the D6, DV6, and DV25 during that time. This was the "end of Westerly" D40 with a snakehead headstock, in Corona they went back to the "paddle", but I think some of the earliest Corona D40's still had snakeheads, as seen on early Corona JF30's as well.

It's been in continuous production since then.

That's correct! I was getting the years mixed up.

@Christr , are you dictating to a machine to make your posts for you? Just checking. Please make sure you read Hans' posts above.

Or the block stamp was misread.

I can accept that the photo looks to be "Jan 1 1999" but there could be something after the 1 (Jan 1x). The first nines are clear to me but if someone says the last digit in the year is not a 9 I can't argue against that.

In the spirit of overthinking, January 1, 1999 is usually a holiday in the US. So were they actually working that Friday or was it just a convenient date to stamp when they returned to work?
