Re: What the word on the Net American made DV6

AS I already said a couple of times in different Threads the only DV6 I played in a San Diego store last summer blew my mind, the tone, volume, clearness and projection were awesome, the construction and the neck were perfect, the price unbelievable for a USA made quality instrument, I repeat that probably it was the best acoustic Guild I ever played...
So why didn't I buy it??? I really don't fancy satin finished acoustic guitars, and the headstock without the chesterfield inlay on such a classic guitar was really something I couldn't stand. Just silly "cosmetic "reasons, I admit it,because from a player's point of view it was a dream come true. Sometimes I still regret it..

It sounds great. May swap in my GAD-30 for it (I could not stand the GAD30 from a playablity standpoint), sounded great, but never could get the action right. Sad thing is the GAD-30 (ITB), is one of the most beautiful guitars I have every seen.

The DV4s and 6s have been well received around here. Do a search and you should come up with some info.

They've been made in Mexico since the beginning of this year. The Mexican made ones are marked as such. The Mexican made ones seem to be equal to the Tacomas, from what I've read.

I've had mine for several months now and I'm still amazed. Best acoustic I've ever owned. For the money I don't think you could do any better. It has great balance from string to string and can get really loud. The notes ring clear. I can't speak for all the DV 6's but the quality of mine is excellent. Easiest playing acoustic I've ever owned and I've owned several Martin 16 series and a D1 and have sold them all. To find a Martin guitar constructed using dove tail neck joint; bone nut and saddle you have to dig a lot deeper in your wallet.

I got mine today. It was made is Tacoma, USA. Very nice guitar, I am actually shocked by how good it sounds. Could be the honeymoon, but I was really gassing hard for a specific Martin that cost 2200 bucks, and was ready to buy it, and I bought the Guild DV6 instead. I would not have purchased had it been made in Mexico.

DV-6

The grain is really nice. Alot nicer than my Martin.

Headstock is not the standard Guild variety, but I like it well enough.

Nice bookmatch. The stain/satin is a cross between gloss and satin. It is dark, unlike any other Rosewood I have sen.

TortisShell binding, nice matched sides

Made in Tacoma

And people complain about wings on Martins, this bird can fly with those wings.

Hey Wooglins!!!
Congratulations..your new aquired DV6 looks spectacular!! :D :D
Great pictures, beautiful details and I'm sure also a tone to die for!!!
Enjoy it like it deserves.

I'm glad to read only enthusiastic comments about the DV6's owners that confirm my impressions when I played one... I might even change my mind about my "cosmetic" criticism, and start looking for one myself....tone is what matters, and that guitar surely got tone in spades. 8) 8)

Re: What is the word on the DV6 (Tacoma Built Recent)

Did you buy that new or used, wooglins?

I've had my Tacoma DV-6 not quite a year, now. It looks exactly as your pictures show. I really like mine; it is a fine instrument. It probably deserves a more skilled operator than me,

They only made the DV-6 in Tacoma during 2007 and 2008. This may or may not affect value down the road a decade or two.

The DV6 is the modern day D25 in as much as it's a whole lot of guitar for a reasonable outlay. The are terrific guitars for the money and sound superb.

A big difference is the Rosewood back and sides. Though now I can clearly see that's not where you're going with the post. Definitely a lot of bang for your buck.

I got it new. I Have a friend at the LGS that called me about it coming in, and that I had to come in and hear it. It was made April 18th, 2008. Guess it is sorta NOS since they have not made them since last year. He said they did not expect to get anymore of the DV-6, and that the next ones they recieve they expect will be the DV6 (Mexican Made).

I hope you are right about the possibe rarity, and the value, but I buy them to play. I wont sell this one, it is a definate keeper. I have a Martin Dread that is my favorite, it is concievable that I will not play it much based on the way this guild sounds and feels.

How 'bout that. If I have my tea leaves aligned correctly, mine was built April14th, 2008.

Edit: By the way, congratulations on your new purchase!

Re: What is the word on the DV6 (Tacoma Built Recent)

I looked for a couple years for an acoustic in the $1000 range that really knocked my socks off. One E chord on the DV6 a year and a half ago was all it took. Like others have said - for the money, unbeatable. I could have found a used guitar, but I was treating myself after 30 years of playing second hand instruments, and the notion of buying off fleabay without playing first is inconcievable to me.

It is a bit of a plain jane, and has a small finish blem at the neck joint, but those things are way down the list of priorities for me. I like the fact that is so unassuming looking but sounds so good. A few months after I purchased it, the shop got a DV4 in, that had me second guessing my choice - but only until I got back home and picked up the 6 again.

Man, that satin-finished rosewood back is just gorgeous! The hog back on my DV4 is pretty, too, almost quilted, but the rosewood is really dramatic! Nice score!

Thanks I appriciate it, I am very pleased. The tone is very controlled. Looking at the inside with my mirror it has very nice brace work, with what looks like well placed tone bars. Everything is scalloped.

Wooglins, that is one FINE piece of lumber! Seriously, I played quite a few of the Tacoma DV4's & DV6's (was always curious because I have an unbelievable Westerly DV6), but I don't think I ever saw one with nicer grain... your photos are really great too. Just looks like they took an extraordinary amount of pride piecing that one together. Congratulations!

Thanks, they had two at the store (went by the store today and found out they bought a slew of those guitars when it was annouced they were being moved to Mexico, and that was why they still had a two). Anyway the one I traded for did not look anything like the other one. Not to say the other one was bad, just not brilliant wood like the one I picked up. The one that had the inferior wood had new strings, the one I got had very old strings (go figure). They now have one left, and it will be the last American made DV-6 they sell. The store staff was not to excited at the prospect of selling the Mexican made ones. I think perception hurts when you get to the 900 dollar price point. I believe the people of Ensenada are very capable of making incredible instruments (I go on a mission trip every year to Ensenada Mexico, so the people there are very dear to my heart). They are very hard workers, and there are alot of college educated young people that are skilled with no jobs.

As a side not, I am an amatuer photographer and have a nice pentax digital SLR with some antique lenses (odd cameras are like guitars, the old lenses are much better for the most part than the modern ones).

On a side note swapped the bridge pins for some bone ones. The only thing I will change on it. What do you think of them.

I recall Nigel's previous thread on his DV6, but I don't think I realized it was built on my 40th birthday. Pretty cool. 8)
