Perfect! I graduated from HS that year, and also graduated from haying to sailing!

Yep. Mowing lawns and shoveling. The beginning of the American Dream.

One of the ways my brother and I made money - shoveling driveways. Nobody got plowed back then. Dad always made us do our own driveway first before anyone else’s. So we were up extra early as there was a lot of competition by the other neighborhood kids. Same with mowing lawns but those where scheduled.

Having bought the local paper route from the prior owner when I was 12, my bothers and I got to know everyone, which we leveraged nicely into many other jobs - baby sitting, junk cleanup, painting, tons of yard work.

We were earning pretty good money well before turning 16 and getting regular jobs.

When we were done haying for the day, my Dad would go to the A&W and bring back a sack of burgers and a couple glass gallon jugs of root beer, oh baby!

Ah, in early '72, my lovely wife was working at some place that did microfiche (and had bi-monthly ammonia leaks), I was working at a one-stop record
wholesaler (at $1.65 an hour--he even let us work overtime--for the same pay) and our band was playing everywhere we could play for free. Later that I felt so bad that we moved to Leucadia so Vicki wouldn't have to work and I was getting $200.00 a week! Of course I was working for my dad stripping furniture
with no gloves or respirator (as I had in high school) but hey! Methylene Chloride is great for clogged sinuses!

Yep... graduated in '72 on a June Friday and I was hanging over the edge of large to be Shell gasoline storage tank in Raway, NJ welding an "overflow" vent the following Monday. No safety harnesses required in those days. Hey...with a welding mask on you don't know how high up you are until you flip the visor up!! Drinking age in NJ was 18 then but I was still 17! The old guys in their 30's brought me back a 6-pack after returning from happy hour!

Curiously the image does not suggest someone "working" for income to me. Suburban vs Rural upbringing?
