In the midst of positively thunderous rain and high-40s temps last Tuesday evening, my wife and I attended a concert at the covered, outdoor concert hall at the Salvation Army in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

I've grown away from this music over the years as I haven't had any occasion to play it in my symphony orchestra work (trumpet). I used to be much closer to it back when I played in brass ensembles and shows.

This band is still as tight and fresh as it was years ago when I used to listen to swing-era stuff a lot. I don't know how many of the big bands are still around, but Glenn Miller's was a real treat.

Anyway, if you want a great night out with family or a significant other, catch these guys when they're touring your area. Great stuff. Turn on the wayback machine!

I love to play and sing those tunes - "The Lamplighter's Serenade", "Moonlight Serenade", "Elmer's Tune", etc. Even a boob like me can hardly fail to swing just a little with that material.

I grew up listing to Big Band; my dad was a real fan and I learned to appreciate it myself. I can still see mom and dad dancing in the living room to Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and many others. Happy memories. If I get a chance to go I certainly will.

Who was the guy that was such an outrageously awesome drummer.....was it Gene Krupa?
Krupa played with Eddie Condon and then for a while with Benny Goodman - remember "Sing, Sing, Sing"? - don't know if he ever worked with Glenn Miller. He went on to have his own band - maybe the only drummer to head a big band?

Other drummers who lead a big band:

Chick Webb (a contemporary of Benny Goodman....1930's). Chick Webb's band was THE swing band to beat in the battle of the bands during the 1930's.

Buddy Rich (post swing era). Incredible drummer, and supposedly a real control freak. I heard recordings of him chewing out his players just for making a suggestion.

Thanks. I used know about Chick Webb, and I'm astonished that I'd forgotten Buddy Rich.
