My horrible day actually started Friday when I received an email from the DC stating my delivery was so big, I was getting my normal truck at 12:30am and a second at 7:30. Redid the whole schedule so I would have a team to do truck when we came in at 6am. Surprise! 12:30 truck was NOT your normal truck, and it didn’t show until 9:30. Then my assistant store manager put their notice in, the store I was at doing inventory at had technical difficulties, had a discrimination accusation at the store and a payroll check issue with a team member. When I FINALLY got home, wife and son were fighting over chores. I go plug in my 74 Bluesbird and THE VOLUME POT LOCKS UP!!!😡
Bed time can not come quick enough!!
Guitar to my tech tomorrow. Hoping he can fix, if not guess I’m looking for a vintage pot

So sorry you had a bad day, or days. Hope your guitar will be back in shape quickly.

Rest comfortably. Maybe tomorrow will go way better.

Jobs are so overrated....

Never had a volume pot lock up, but I'm not a big pot user like some.

I wonder if you can finesse it back into life. Look at it from the control cavity, did something fall in it?

One of those days... sorry you had a hard time... but our kind is resilient enough to go through situations like this and come out stronger ✊

Reminds me of when I was working - There certainly could be days like that.

Imho, retirement is not one bit overrated. It's like you can finally exhale & relax. Start planning carefully & retire as early as you possibly can!

Ugh, it's a bummer, but tomorrow is another day to start fresh. Hope it's a better one for you.

I just saw this on eBay, vintage Guild branded pot, NOS, but 200k.

  • Single Coil pickups sound best on 250K pots (think Strat or Tele pickups)
  • Humbuckers and stronger pickups sound best on 500K pots
  • 300K pots do an excellent job of filling the gap between 250K and 500K.
WHY?

The pot itself dampens high frequencies from your pickups’ signal. It does this by adding a short across your pickup’s signal. Lower resistance pots, like 250K, will dampen more high frequencies off of your signal than a 500K pot will.

If you were to connect your pickups directly to the output jack, you would notice your tone is louder and brighter. Most instrument manufacturers pick the pot value that makes the instrument sound the best.

MY TECH FIXED IT!! I think sometimes he is magic. I can’t tell you how happy I am, but you guys get it. I could replace the pot, with a vintage, period correct one, but it just would not be the same. My #1 lives to fight another day!

As a recovering alcoholic, an active guitaraholic and workaholic, just don’t see me retiring for a while. If my body keeps falling apart, I may change my tune!

In fact the only CTS pots I couldn’t save were heavily corroded by an off gassing pick guard and one that looked like someone used an oxyacetylene torch to solder the ground on the back.

And ANOTHER pot locked up! What is going on?!?! I’ve had the guitar for almost a year and no issues. Then twice in a week, a pot locks up. Anyone ever heard of this? This is now concerning.

It's because of the pending change in marijuana regulation in Virginia. People who are opposed to the change are locking up pot now, while they can.
