Unfortunately, Don's sister passed away last night. She'd been on hospice care and it was expected soon, and pancreatic cancer doesn't mess around usually. Getting to Southern West Virginia is a PITA anyway even at the best of times. And getting to Horse Creek and then up to the mountain where they have the services is an all day thing. He also has a carotid artery procedure coming up very soon and may require either a stint or angioplasty. With all this going on I've convinced him to put travel plans on hold for now. Maybe if things are looking better in October he can go to Myrtle Beach and stay with his brother and his wife and then visit the cemetary, with them driving. But I think it's a bad time for him to go and I sure as hell don't want him to get stuck there!! With things that are happening this whole thing has gotten about as real as can be. Geoguy brings up a good point about the ventilator availability. I'm actually glad to be retired and not to have to go anywhere, at least for right now. It's getting real.......

Sorry for your and Don's loss Tom.
This is terrible news, but I hope she had family around and is now no longer in any pain.

Tom, very sorry to hear that. I wish you and Don's family every strength and will include you in my prayers.

I have no opinion on your travel plans, but do just what feels right for you.

Thanks guys. Kat was his big sister and took care of him when he was little so they were fairly close. She'd been in a LOT of pain so her passing is at least relief from that!! I appreciate your thoughts and prayers very much. :encouragement:

Now I don't feel like making any more fun around here, even if the death is not directly related to the virus.

This is a tough subject, guys, and of course it's highly off-topic for LTG. ruedi, I do encourage you to continue to try to keep it light. But, if you choose not to, I understand that too.

I'll do my part... Last week, my son and I were out at a boxing tournament and we ordered our drinks. The bartender served us Coronaviruses with Lyme Disease. ;)

My point wasn't to bring everyone down. Death is a part of life.... the very last part. Kat was an old woman and in quite a bit of pain. My point is doing extensive traveling these days when people are canceling cruises and flights and such things and getting stuck in nowhere South West Virginia and can't even get a Trailways bus out is a tad too scary to us to consider him going home at this time. Death isn't an emergency, it's the lack of an emergency. Appreciate the kind thoughts, though.... and now back to our usual banter, yes??

p.s. - I still can't get that "the onion" link to work......

Tom, I figured that too. I think we all need to remember to keep everything in perspective. 50 years ago, the world I grew up in was a button push away from nuclear annihilation. Since then very little actually scares me any more. Calm, but serious heads need to prevail here, that's all I'll say.

Anyway, regardless of your opinions on the subject, I really hope everyone can enjoy a little levity for a bad situation.

My late father was in wars , when our eastern neighbour attacked us - he got shot through his kneecap and limped slightly ever after. He lived to be over 80. he was a captain in artillery with about round 100 cannons in his "team". So he must have sent some folks to meet their maker, too. He never talked too much about it, though. But for us kids - born only shortly after the war was over - our whole childhood was shadowed with thought "Are the russians attacking?" Then I served in navy - and after that I quit worrying about it. Cold war - I figured that if you and them start to send missiles, we have nothing to worry, because there ain't no that important targets here. I'm still sure that MPLS was much more dangerous place to be than Vaasa - even being only 350 miles away from Leningrad.

Today I take caution not to deliberately expose us to any extra crowds etc - and wash my hands etc - edited out political content

But like Dylan wrote in 1964 or so : ". . . if God's on our side - He'll stop the next war."
