Good morning.

Let me introduce you to our Mr. Alain Berset, member of the Swiss governement and our chief health minister.

After helding a press conference discussing the threads of the corona virus and suggesting a code of conduct including not to shake hands and to maintain "social distance", he did:

We trustingly place our fate in your shaken hands, Mister Minister. Bwahaha :)

What a bunch of ***************

And, of course, Corona beer sales are way down...seriously.

Whatever you do, don’t put the lime in the Corona beer! You must put the lime in the coconut, mix it all up, and then you’ll feel better.

^ Actually that's what my son and I were drinking last week. The bartender called that a Corona Virus with Lyme Disease. :)

(not to make light of a terrible situation, by the way)

Lol!! Maybe most of our North American members won't know the the starter of the virus in your montage - german football (soccer) coach Joachim Lowe, who is somewhat famous for thrusting his hands into his nether regions & then taking a sniff! I found it pretty hilarious though.

Hysteria has taken over here in Australia & for some reason, it seems that certain sections of the population have decided what they need most in these trying times is...toilet paper. There's been a run on that (as well as rice , flour, sugar, cooking oil, personal hygiene products). The supermarket shelves are totally bereft of toilet paper. People have been fighting over the last packets. I have just 5 rolls left in my house. Lucky with the recent rains we have had, the grass has grown and I can always just drag my butt on my lawn like our canine friends have done for time in memoriam.

Is this madness occurring elsewhere?

Definitely in Germany! People prepare like for the end of the world looking how they shop! Even all disinfectant against bacteria was sold out, not realizing that it is not at all effective against viruses! Pure panic in the social media and normal print and TV media. Crazy.

Only where the grass is suitable.

As long as no one starts having dreams about an old black lady who lives in the middle of a Nebraska corn field....

It's a bit crazy in the US - hand sanitizer, wipes, etc. hard to find.

IMHO, the media is making things worse. Medical advice is to wash hands, etc, just like cold and flu season. So why is the media portraying this as the end of the world? It's like the TV weatherman when snow is coming - prepare for the worst!

Yes, same here.

*Note to self: sell lawn mower, buy lawn fertilizer.

And yes, the media definitely craze things way up. Combine this with politicians/administrations somewhere between incapable and corrupt, a privatized and saved-to death health services, externalized and globalized production/supply of even the most basic needs and goods, just-in-time inventory management and a population that has forgotten how to think critically and independently - there you go, hello crisis.

Interesting to see how fast the varnish of "civilisation" gets cracked.

What I don't understand is the rush to buy bottled water around here.

Reminds me a bit of the Y2K madness. My former neighbor kept their in ground pool warm, (must have cost a small fortune as it was a typical sub freezing winter), for drinking water just in case our water system failed.

I should have saved my phone books.

The Corona virus thread over at TDPRI got shut down; I had nothing to do with it...However, I might have suggested in my usual subtle way that the sky may not be actually falling...

I have friends outside Atlanta who've had two huge flats of water and food rations along with toiletries for emergencies delivered in their 4 car garage. It's enough for the two of them for over a year and the supplies are good for up to 25 years!! Not only that, they stocked up in the same hysterical manner with ammo, so that when the zombie apocalypse comes they'll be safe. Stores here are bereft of toilet paper, sanitizers, soaps, bleach, etc., etc. It all seems a little bit much for me. There's a cruise ship docked in Santa Barbara, CA north of Los Angeles and a 71 year old man died on board. They're not letting the ship leave and they haven't even determined the cause of death yet!! Yet, they'll let the people on board off the ship and have free run of Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez, and Solvang during all this.

Over react, much??

I've finished restocking our bottled water that we have delivered for drinking. It had gotten down to just the two bottles (two weeks for two of us) and that's it. So now we're up to six and I like to have at least 8. That's habit from Southern California and being prepared for earthquakes, which we do get here as well. We're out here in this giant valley surrounded by huge mountains and we've had a couple of pretty decent quakes in 15 years. So my water thing is motivated by quakes, not viruses.

I'll be watching you ;-)

I agree that the media coverage is "interesting". To hark back to an earlier time "bad news sells papers" so there really is no economic reason to adopt more moderate coverage.

No matter what we do or not - eventually we all be dead in the future . . .

There is this meat & sausage etc company named ITIKKA - we had a running joke back in 60:s - "Eat Itikka sausage - you will die anyway!"

Hard to tell if the headline-quality has improved of gotten worse because of Corona - at least there is some alternatives to "who has been seen where with whom"

Communicating over net is safe, too. In them olden days - bacteria was transferred via letters written on paper - and worse yet - transported by birds . . .
