The "Hot Hoiman" series of ads were probably my favorite when we were doing research for the Ampeg book. These are from 1952 (left) and 1954 (right).

These seem so awfully goofy today. I wonder if they actually helped or hurt ampeg sales back then?

The "Fender Bass" had just been introduced by those left coast radicals on a national level when that first ad ran. Everett was about serious instruments.

Rocky, I used to hang out with some studio bass players in New York back in the early '70s. One was named Russell George. When George was young. He went to a gig/party/something-or-other and the bass player had an early P-Bass. Russell tried it, but had to put the Bass in a chair seat and play it like a stand-up before he could get it going!!

I was playing a Guild fretless bass in Repair Shop and Russell noticed me playing.
He said," Hey man, nice playing. Are you working with anybody?"
I said, "Yeah, maybe you heard of us? A Trio. We're called, Me, Myself and I"

He laughed and said, "Harry, it's 90% Perspiration and 1O% Inspiration."

He played with a lot of name players, like Aretha. One time he came in after a studio gig and said, "Man, she kissed me on the Head!
Nice Guy.

And only jazz.
It's funny. The Ampeg trope is "Everett was a Jazz nut, so his amps were super clean."

The reality is nearly all of the guitar amps made during his tenure are dirt monsters. They didn't make clean guitar amps until '65 or so with the Gemini/Rocket II series, and he sold the business shortly afterwards.

He is a fictional character. Hot Hoiman = Hot Herman in a Bronx-ish NYC accent (that doesn't exist anymore).

During the 1960's, I was in college, and great rock groups were playing. Local groups would play on my college campus, and the bass players were really groovy. Boy did I want to me a bass player, though I was a regular guitar player (6 string flat top). Somehow, I never learned how to play bass. Regret it 'til this day.
