The '82 M-80 arrived safe and sound (thanks again 'zilla!).

Man, this is a totally different beast. And I do mean BEAST.

More later.

Wow! I didn't know you scored that - nice one! Looks damn near mint.

Excellent. How do the XR-7 pickups compare to the HB-1s?

I didn't have a chance to give it a thorough test run last night, but the p'ups sound good. Not quite as vintage sounding as the HB-1's, better for a metal sound, muddy up a bit on the very low end, but they handle all the tone variations, pickup selections, and phase switch great. The roomie gave it a test run too and digs it more than the S-100.

It's not quite mint - has some dings here and there but it's in really good condition. The case on the other hand is rather beat and has some pretty good sized tears on the outside. The inside is decent though.

It'll take awhile to get used to as it is quite different than my other gits. The neck is a lot like the S300-A, but I haven't had that one in my possession much. Gotta get used to the wider frets too. as for the weight, it's perfectly balanced and actually pretty comfortable with a strap standing up.

Ok, that's enough typing on the phone for now. Back to work. More later.

Heresy!

Hey, it's the roomie. You already have to wonder about the roomie's judgment because they are the roomie of ... :)

Good point. Anybody who wants a member of this site for a roomie should definitely have their head examined!

+1

We were comparing the M-80 to his Epi LP (which is pretty hefty) and the M-80 was definitely heavier. The maple neck adds a good bit versus the 'hog neck on the LP. Anyway, he prefers LP's whereas I'm more of an SG fan. So the S-100 is definitely my style more so than his. But he dug the M-80 and I said see? why bother with Gibsons!

The difference in serial numbers is just seven numbers, but since mine has the lower number, mine is more vintage.

Hard to say for sure (cameras or guitars?), but it's interesting how much difference there is in the burst center colors on these twins.

FWIW, I liked the M-80 better than the two reissue S-100's I've sampled. Mainly the preference was based on the jumbo frets and ebony fingerboard the M-80 has.

I thought it should be good on 'ya, Q. Most of the features are different from your other gits - the maple neck, the frets and board, the maple top, the XR7 pickups. And a good fit for the style of music you play, too.

We'll see how much you like it over time. That's the biggest and best test, I've found.

I found Q's M-80 on Columbus craigslist and kept it about ten months. Really liked it a lot, and so did my buddies. But I've been more into playing the archtops and acoustics in recent months.

Much fun to see it go to an excellent home. Thanks, Geoff.

True, so true. How many have you gone through? ;)

What was good about this whole buying experience was that I actually held this guitar in my hands before I bought it, unlike any of my other Guild electrics. I paid a visit to guildzilla over Christmas to pick up a reissue S-100 case and had the opportunity to sample his fine collection of Guilds and spend a pleasant evening chatting over a couple beers. The M-80 definitely stood out and, I agree, the neck is what I remembered most (besides the weight, of course!) - 24 jumbo frets, ebony, a bit more radius curve than an S-100. Like I said, it's the same neck as my S300-A, but that's another story. Anyway, I kept the M-80 in the back of my mind (as well as the T-100 with the added Bigsby - I might have to get one of those eventually, or a comparable SF) and when one came up for sale on Ebay I PM'd 'zilla to ask what he thought about it. That's when he offered me his, and so it went. It was just a day or two after I contacted him that Thunderface told me about one he found in a shop near him. When it rains it pours. ;)

I gave it a bit of play time again today and it's definitely a rock machine. I'm diggin' the XR-7's, although I probably wouldn't use it for the stonerrock sound I get out of the S-100's. It's somewhere between that sound and the Duncans in the reissue S-100, and the p'ups are definitely hot. Seems to have better sustain than the S-100's (which is some stiff competition) and it screams through the Marshall. Guildzilla didn't have an amp comparable to mine so I wasn't entirely sure how it would sound, but the feel of it was enough to have me hooked.

Thanks again, Doug!

Sweet Qvart! I've always been intrigued by those after matsickma's description. I'm more envious that you got to go back to the Ohio and mess with Guilds over beers with 'zilla.

Your collection is growing!

WARNING: Lots of pictures below. Click HERE for the Photobucket album.

Okay, like I said before, it's nowhere near mint, but overall it's in pretty good shape. All of the dings and whatnot shown below don't really detract from how solid it feels and plays.

Looks like a bit of binding separation here.
02lowerbinding.jpg

Cracking between the plies? Some scuffs.

Ding in the binding.
04bindingding.jpg

Couple dings on the bottom of the body.
05bottomding.jpg

Couple small dings on the front.
06bodyding.jpg

Cracking in the cutaways - seems to be where the 'hog and maple are joined. Thunderface's M-80 has the same cracking, as does the one that was recently on Ebay.
07cutaway.jpg

Neck and back of the body are pretty good. Some small indentations on the back.
08cutaway.jpg

Ding on the side of the headstock.
09headstockding.jpg

Couple small dings around the edge.

Seven digits after Thunderface's.

Frets and fingerboard are in good shape.

Bridge has a bit of tarnish, but it's in good shape. Needs to be taken apart and cleaned. The recessed part of these Muellers collect a lot of dirt. Crack in the bridge pickup ring.

The neck pickup must have been changed at some point, but the original p'up was reinstalled. Notice the extra hole. The ring is also cracked in two places.

Oy, the outside of the case is a bit rough. Some tears and one good gouge, but overall it's solid. Latches all work.

Very nice! The Peavey sticker on the case cracks me up! I think that Reish looks out of place with all of the vintage stuff. You should give it to me. ;)

Cheers, Jeff
