Thank you sirSerial maps to 1963. And welcome.
Yes, a lot of guys were switching from the open gear Grovers back then, there was some kind of talk that the open geared tuners were somehow inferiorSomeboady added Schallers later, which incidentally become the factory tuners on these guitars/many Guilds for quite a while.
No doubtA couple of unfortunate abbreviations: "BS and BJ." Just sayin...
That's great! Thanks a lot
I bought my D 40 from original owner, he owned a music store. Great buy , sold it to me for a grandThe big acoustic guitar boom was all but over by 1968.
Bluegrass started perverting old timey Gospel/Country by the 1940's with speed more than anything else, I mean you think the guys might be on some speed, harder faster, I'm still not sure what's more demanding on the guitar, Bluegrass or Rockabilly.
If you could only go back in time and snag a couple:
$230 in 1963 = $2095.57 in 2022
$355 = $3234.47 in 2022
In fact they wouldn't be that cheap at all, adjusted for the value of the dollar over that amount of time, sadly now worth 10% of what it was then, and it makes you wonder what happens when it reaches zero, where does it go from there? Nevermind, I think I know the answer. When I was a kid there was a "story" about a guy that takes a wheelbarrow full of money - you guess the time and country - to the store to buy a loaf of bread, but when he went to retrieve the money outside the store, someone had stolen the wheelbarrow and left the money.
This is why I buy guitars, they have real value. They go up in value, at least enough to ward off inflation. From there on, all tinkering/playing can be regarded as "work", all of that endless guitar stringing/tuning suddenly excusable, etc.
That's my story and I'm stickin to it ;]
