    Happy Birthday Frono!

I don't know how I missed it. (How did we miss it?) Yesterday was Frono's birthday and we missed it. Nobody knows where he comes from or how old he is (we actually do) but we all suspect that his ding-dong is enormous and frightening. Everyone wish Frono a Happy Birthday!

    Happy Birthday GAD!

I noticed your icon at the bottom of the page identifying members' birthdays. Not everyone deserves a Happy Birthday thread, but I think we can afford the bandwidth for you!

    Arch press

I now think you're right and take back what I said. In the first photo the control box looked to me like it was attached to the press, but I believe that I was mistaken. I also realize that my choice of the word "definitely" was a mistake. Thanks for the correction.

    Arch press

Those are definitely two different presses in the photos from MLBob and GardMan.

Starfire III what to expect tone and playability, weight, etc vs other models, vintage only.

Bigsbies are surprisingly light and add very little weight over a harp tailpiece. Personally, I've never had a single issue with a Bigsby, but I tend to prefer a shallow break angle over the bridge. A SF3 usually use a B3 rather then the B7 with the extra bar for added break angle, so the break...

MEDIC ! My Carvin just crapped out on me

The AC music signal from the preamp tubes eventually makes its way through the output tubes and then the output transformer, but that's only AC. All of the DC is blocked by the coupling capacitors along the way: C3, C34, C7, C41, C18, C22, and C23. When you adjust the bias current in the output...

    NVGD

You can flip the magnet in one of the pickups to change phase. They're not magnetized the way you would expect, with N at one end and S at the other. Instead, they have N along one long edge and S along the other. So, after removing the chrome cover, loosen the screws on the bottom plate that...

    Pickup Height

The magnets can have a lot to do with it. Alnico 2 magnets are sweet and musical, but tend to give up on the low end early. Alnico 5 on the other hand is more modern sounding and stays tight at all levels but, to my ears, doesn't sound as good. JMHO, YMMV, ... Swapping magnets in your favorite...

MEDIC ! My Carvin just crapped out on me

You might have to try a lot of different tubes to get both at the same time as tubes are all different. That's why they sell matched sets. The current is what you should aim for. The voltage is just for reference. And what Nuuska said...

    Guild branding change?

I guess I'm the only one that sees stars and stripes as being emblematic of a certain nation.

Is your concern the grid bias? -15V vs -17 printed on the schematic? That may or may not be an issue, but less negative bias results in more plate current not less. If you could adjust to -17 you would be even farther from 40mA current.

MEDIC ! My Carvin just crapped out on me

You're sure the output tubes aren't beat after the abuse they took before you replaced the coupling caps?

    Still happens

My T100 was shipped in just the case covered in plastic wrap. When I complained, the seller claimed that shippers tend to be more careful handling it wrapped that way than if it were in a cardboard box. I doubt that it's true. I suspect that shippers treat everything with equally little respect.

MEDIC ! My Carvin just crapped out on me

The instructions to set the bias to 40mA means DC current, not AC. If you can not achieve 40mA, then it's possible that the tubes are no good. Are these the same EL84b tubes that have been in the amp all along? If so, they've taken quite a beating. R34, R35, and R36 along with C26, C27, C28...

Finally writing a book on soldering

I assume you're replacing a component? Something that seems obvious once you've been told: cut all of the leads and remove the body of the component first. Then you can remove the leads one at a time. After that, use copper braid as Dread said to remove the solder from the holes.

Why does my fretboard look like this?

Are you sure the lighter brown isn't the original color while the black is the color attained after years of playing? The sweat from my fingers causes some woods to turn black... Honestly, that fingerboard doesn't look like ebony to me. It's not the color that makes me think that, but the...
