Have we seen this model, yet?

Gloss mahogany center-block SFII, with a stop tail, gold hardware and DeArmonds?

    Newark Street over the years

It just occurred to me that we're approaching a decade or so of the original NS models (175s, M-75s, Starfires, etc). Those of you that have had a few, have we begun to notice any variation in spec/quality over the years? Seems like most of the early 2010s ones I see for sale online still look...

So how many (vintage) S-100s got made with mini-hums?

There's at least the one that made it into the catalog, but even that text boasts of Guild's "new" pickups. Was it a one-off/prototype? Where is it now?

Did I miss some Newark Street changes?

Look at this M-75 for sale on Reverb: Finish looks much browner/darker, with a more subtle burst that's more of a rim burst than the heavy-shouldered burst I'm used to seeing. Also a tortie guard and sporting a made in China sticker. Are these no longer Korean...

Has "Franz" been a misspelling all this time?

Random thought -- besides manufacturing complexity, why not have an oval fretboard?

Wouldn't something that's flatter towards the middle and curved towards the edges give the best of both worlds? Seems like it'd allow a comfortable, curved feel while keeping the fretboard from choking out the high E on bends. Probably hard to achieve this with precision by hand, but I bet...

    Al Caiola 9/7/1920-11/9/2016

Seems Al Caiola passed away two days ago. Not really much out there from scanning google news results.

    Parts Rant

Sidetrack, but I'd like to rant a minute... What annoys me about the Guild store is the limited selection of parts. You should be able to buy a B-7 brand new from Guild, since it's a regular production part on their NS SF-Vs and VIs (in nickel and gold, respectively), yet their online store...

    Case repair? Separated top...

So my wife's new SG came in one of those brown/pink '90s Gibon cases, which is pretty nice, however, the arched plywood top has come loose from the thin rim around the edges. It seems to still be tight through the neck area, but I believe the whole body perimeter is loose and really only held...

Tone, the Muller roller bridge, and armchair physics...

I am going to go ahead and admit I don't like the Muller bridge -- I think it imparts a banjo-like, plunky tone acoustically and, although that doesn't make it through to the amplified sound so much, I don't like it and I think I know why they sound that way to me. I'd previously just assumed...

Paging Walter -- NS X-175 pickup placement

Hey guys, I've noticed (from photos) that the Newark Street X-175s seem to have the bridge pickup mounted noticeably farther from the bridge than old Franz-equipped 175s. My question is how far one could cheat it towards the bridge if willing to make a second set of mounting holes. Is there a...

Need suggestions: audiophile earphones under $200

So my wife is getting a new iPod for her birthday (gif from her father) and I want to get her some nice earbuds (also for her birthday). I've been poking around a bit on the internet to see what's around and have seen a couple models from Klipsch (S4i II and x10i) and one from Sure (SE 215-K)...

Opening the flood gates: Strat pickup recommendations...

I have an '84-ish St. Blues strat that I love to death but have always half wanted to change pickups. What's in it now is a set of unknown pickups with silver "Fender Custom Shop" stickers on the bottom, (TX Specials?) and I've always thought they were a little dull. The guitar feels great...

Does anybody make a Super Reverb (or similar) clone?

I have a friend that bought a supposedly refreshed SF Super Reverb and is thinking about ditching it b/c it's given him a lot of trouble. I think in the few months he's had it, the output transformer has been replaced and it now has some sort of intermittent noise issue. I'm of the opinion...

Best method of removing excess glue from fretboard inlays?

Back to my wife's '82 SG... There is a bead of glue that sticks up around each of the fretboard inlays. I assume it's epoxy, as it feels pretty hard if you try to pick at it. Anyway, it sticks up enough that you can feel it a little when bending strings. Does not affect playability, but...

Any Brian May owners out there?

It dawned on me this morning (sorry for the pun) that I've been poking around here for a few years now and haven't ever seen any mention of the varoius Brian May models. Used to see them hanging on the wall at GC back in the 90s, but never had my hands on one. I always thought a factory-made...

Has anybody tried Stew Mac's new PAF replicas?

Saw these in the newest Stew Mac catalog when it came the other day: Golden Age Parsons Street Humbuckers All the specs sound right to me (unpotted, low output, etc.). I don't like most humbuckers b/c they're muddy and flabby to my ears, but SD Seth Lovers always sounded pretty dynamic and...

I need a quick lesson on potentiometers

First, two questions: 1. Does the value of pots and/or caps connected to them have any impact on the guitar's voice when they're at "10" or does that only come into play as you roll off volume/tone? 2. How can I determine pot value if it doesn't seem to be marked on the outer casing? Second...

    What kind of glue?

OK, I mentioned a while back that my Magnatone/Noble amp has some water damage to the cabinet. It's a shame b/c the amp is otherwise very clean, but the bottom of one of the cabinet sides is a mess... Plywood has swollen out and a couple pieces have broken off, which I will reglue with wood...
