1999 Guild Finesse I got from Richard P. It is its turn in the rotation--2nd time around - just a marvelous guitar to play. More pictures post #317.

Beautiful F-512 Chazmo! I wish my arms were a bit longer every time I see one.

That looks very much the same as mine, Walt. My house was built in 1961 though.

Thanks for the well wishes on my F-512. That guitar is what brought me to Guild in 2007. Total "Maxell moment" when I pulled it off the wall and banged out a few chords on it.

My trusty F-512 is back out as I did some measurements earlier. FYI, body depth is slightly more than 4-1/2"

I might be wrong , mostly am but I’ve wondered if different point of views so to say come into effect on widths/ depths . You would think not in most cases at least I do but measurements seems to vary in my mind from IM to EM ( Internal to external ) measurements . It might not acount for every 1/16th but even lower bouts ( only thing I’ve measured) lol seem to vary about an 1/8 th to 3/16’s of an inch maybe a tad more and sometimes less . Anywho just thinking out loud . lol 😂

Hey, Ray!

No question there are differences among us as we do measurements and especially with the equipment we use. My measurements compared to yours, say, have no control between them. They should be close, but maybe one or two teenths of difference is likely. The only thing we can really say is that I know that if I do comparative measurements the process is going to yield pretty accurate, relative numbers. My measurements today of my 2006 F-512 vs. a 2007 F-412 determined that there's almost 1/4" difference (the F-412 is 4-3/4") between the depth! Pretty big surprise to me, and pretty significant difference! The bigger surprise to me is that I thought the depth of the recent, thinned out guitars (since Tacoma-era, that is) is 4", not > 4.5" . Here's a link to the details that I posted 15 years ago. Maybe I can be forgiven for forgetting that the thinning out to 4" was done in Westerly in 1971! :)

BTW, with respect to all guitars I've seen in recent memory, the published specs (which, admittedly, are often wrong or stale), are "external" measurements by your definition. I.e., they measure the outside of the guitar. Measuring the internal specs really is kind of irrelevant with respect to the specs unless you're a builder and you are looking at replacing wood panels or whatever.

Another interesting fact is that the 17" jumbo Guild lower bout width has increased in each iteration from Tacoma through (now) Oxnard. That was another big surprise to me because the specs were actually correct and I was calling them into question.

G312 D50 square.jpg

For my second gig in a week, I decided to swap my 2007 F30 for my 2012 G312 as my second, alternate tuning guitar. The G312 in this iteration was briefly a part of the New Hartford Standard series, with a gloss body but satin-finished neck and plain appointments. It's basically a 12-string D50 Standard, but I assume with some strengthening to help the body cope with the greater string tension.

Can you tell which guitar gets more use by looking at the tops? The G312 lacks some of the power of an F512, but it still sounds pretty terrific and brought some needed lushness to George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass." There were a couple of guitarists in the audience whose eyes lit up at the sight of a 12er, and after the gig I gave them each a chance to play it. The guitar breathed a sigh of contentment at being played by hands more competent than mine.

I have the G312 in mind for some recording I hope to do this summer.

Gibson "Gospel" purchased new in 1973. Stock Grover Rotomatics, ebony fingerboard, 3-piece maple neck, spruce top/contoured (pressed plywood) maple back, maple sides. Might be a prototype. An early example, in any case.
