Congrats, looks like a good score! I believe that bridge on the newer guitar if it's the original
bridge is rosewood, it's just lighter in color than what's typically seen on a D25.
Lots of saddle height, looks like it was well kept!
Also, if you hit that bridge with some mineral oil when the strings are off, along with
the fretboard, they might darken up some.

RBSinTo,

Unfortunately, what one person considers silly and annoys them is a hoot to others. You may consider the number of guitars I have as well as cameras silly and it causes you consternation that some one would be so wasteful. On the flip side I've learned a lot about the differences in various guitars and the fun of using digital and film cameras of various eras. Silliness to you but a lot of fun experimenting to me!

This hasn't ever been a " Your doing it wrong ! " forum as long as I have been visiting, and it has certainly been, " Oh cool, you bought another guitar! Tell us about it. Show us pictures. " forum. All I can say is get used to it.

Well said John.
And RBS, read me now and believe me later, you should really know I've owned
and enjoyed a lot of guitars, but I only own ONE camera.
And I take a lot of pictures of guitars with that camera.
And some of those are pictures are of the SAME guitar. And some are of different guitars.
And some are the same and different guitars together.
Hopefully you understand what I'm talking about, and you too own at least ONE camera,
but you use that camera to photograph more than ONE thing.

Because that'd be.... like... really boring :ROFLMAO:

How would you compare them playability and sound wise? I know it’s early but are there any differences that stand out?

I’m always amazed at how two of the same guitar can sound different sometimes. Back when you could visit stores AND they actually had a lot of stock with multiples of the same model there was often one that stood out amongst the others.

Not only do they often sound different - each might inspire very different music.
That's been one of the wonderful mysteries of having different guitars or different
models of the same guitar - keeping an open mind before picking one up and
seeing what song or songs serendipitously materialize and just going with it.
Add some different tunings, different strings, and all kinds of possibilities abound...

Pretty much similar on the neck, won’t get to put new strings on until next week. The immediate noticeable difference is the difference in weight between the two, the 77 is noticeably lighter.

those are 2 fantastic Guild D-25's. if you decide for some reason to keep both, you have done very, very well!

Those are the same model guitar in name only. Really, you've already said they are different. What I'd do, is get a D 25 from the 90s, one from the 2000s, and a modern one. See if you can have one from each factory.

Add a separate building out back to house them.

1980-1994 is a cool era for Guild. leftover late 70's>Gruhn-Walker>pre-Fender. On that D-25, the snake shaped headstock, with black overlay, gold peaked roof/underlined logo, sound hole rosette, and 1987 date stamp on the back of the headstock, place it square into that period. I like that the top is not stained (NT), it makes the headstock and rosette pop more and looks more like an early JF/GF acoustic, or even an F-50-R NT or D-55 NT from that era *I think* would have same rosette, or very similar (95 and later on those would abalone rosette). These guitars are a little heavy but that's what make them so magical, somehow. Guns n Roses, Tesla, Clapton, and many others played/still play Guild acoustics from that period. Anyway I can understand not keeping both when u could have something else a little different at least. I would hang onto the 77 for sure. if u sell the 87, someone is getting a super nice D-25, from a very specific (Gruhn-Walker) era at Westerly. D-25's are not so hard to find, but most Guild acoustics from 1987 are not D-25's, and would cost double-triple what you probably paid, or even more. Things were pretty high-end at Westerly in 1987, for whatever that is worth.

Looks like a workhorse. Yeah, I'd shoot to darken the bridge and fretboard with at least lemon oil when you change strings.

Two nice guitars, though. Tough choice!
Ok, now y’all are making me re think that I should keep both 😊. I had to travel today and will be back home Friday, so I’ll restring her when I get back and see what the tone quality difference might be. I’ll also oil the bridge and fretboard and clean the frets. The guy I bought it from had it about one year and never changed the strings even when he bought it, so I know it’s gonna be a huge difference. The strings are definitely old. The finish checking is very minimal, and I know I’ve seen other guilds from the same era where this seems to be not uncommon. Were it not for the minimal checking it would truly be in like new condition.

Take your time making any decision. If it hasn’t been played for a while it will likely need some good playing time to open back up.
