How did that make it past quality control?!

Looks like he ran out of the dark stain and had to change direction.

"There is no difference in quality between a Rick Gunn burst and a Martin burst." Does Martin even do a burst like that? Either way something isn't right. Such a nice guitar, why not just leave it alone? Oh well.......

Ah, thanks - I was assuming it came from Martin, my bad! My question should have been simpler: "Whaaa?".

A sign of a generally bad day is I get cranky when people post something that makes it seem to me that they posted without reading :)

From the seller's description "This is not a refinish to solve or cover some problem".

Hmm . . . that's an interesting comment. It's almost an admission that the job is so overdone that it might look like it was done to cover up a defect.

If I was the luthier, I would not want my name mentioned in that listing.

It looks like an attempt to do what I've heard is referred to as the "1934 Gibson" dark sunburst finish. Some people really love it. I'm not really a big fan.

thanks for the education JP, sure looks that way. the seller would benefit greatly by including that info in the listing!
Still, it just looks wrong. the Gibsons in JP's link look much more authentic

Occam's Razor

I think the owner commissioned something like a 1934 Gibson Dark Sunburst, saw the results and had second thoughts. I think the luthier did a very good job, doing what they were asked to do.

This is either a Good Idea that failed miserably in its execution (i.e. it was supposed to be a traditional 'burst) or a Bad Idea that was properly executed. If the former the only reason to mention the luthier is revenge and I don't see that in the ad.

IMO. YMMV.
