Chicago, da Bronx (not states but they could be), Twin Cities, and now NE KS where I will probably die, moving is such a pain especially as you get older.
Actually I think where I am is all things considered, the best place I have ever lived.

Harmony H-173 bought in 1960 (retired), Alvarez AC60S 2008, Eastman AC320ce 2009 "Hybrid", Guild D25M 1974 (all mahogany, archback), Martin Grand J35E 2009, Martin D12-20 1970, Martin OM-21 2009, Martin 00-15M Custom (full body gloss, wide neck) 2011, Martin 00-15M Custom (12 fret, wide neck, solid peghead) 2012, Voyage-air VAOM-06 2010

I'm with you on that one, Kurt. I just use guitar, or bass, or whatever the specific instrument is. I also spell mahogany out. Not a fan of these abbreviations and nicknames.

@ Frono, reminds me of another version with the Texan kid who ends up at a snotty Eastern Seaboard College. He asks, "Where's the library at?" The response he gets, of course, is, "At this school we don't end our sentences with a preposition!" And so he rephrases, "Where's the library at, a$$hole?"

That's the version I recall and Harvard was the snooty school but I was too lazy to type it out myself and just grabbed the first similar joke I found that I could copy and paste :)

As for the language aspects of the Blues, one of the things that impresses me about Curtis Blues' original "Baker Man" is that it is a modern original but captures the innuendo and general feel of the Blues language so well.

And I always have been fascinated by the correlation, being the sad mathematician that I am. But very true.
Amazing how much of our universe can be explained with Maths....

I'm with you Pascal. I've always had trouble with that "music is math" construct. Because at math I inhale big time. For my own comfort I consider math just one of the building blocks of music along with heart and art. A musician who plays a piece in perfect time and rhythm with no feeling will not do it justice. For me music is a combination of math, creativity, and passion. For me there's a difference between people who make music and people who play music.
And that my friends is my personal rationalization for sucking at math. Although I am completely capable of adding 2 & 2 and getting 4 most of the time. :biggrin-new:

Ever wonder why infinity times zero is zero and infinity times infinity is still infinity?
Same thing with "1".
Wassup wit dat?
Does it keep anybody else here awake at night?

Dude! You're freakin me out.

1 x 0 x infinity = Can we move this to the thread about nothing? :biggrin-new:

I almost forgot about the square root nightmares until you mentioned that.
Same 3 numbers.
Conicidence?
I think not.
Cube roots, too.

Wow, guess I missed this too, probably before I followed the board regularly. Mark me up for Central Massachusetts, where the humidity is high, the winters are cold and the women good looking...

Pascal, I just have one thing to say to you: you are always where its at...

For you math enthusiasts, the lovely Sirkku (who was a math major in college, Steve) asks if anyone would care to
consider the square root of -1. Now there is a bed-roller for about 3 AM... =)

(Oh, OH! I am #100! I love round numbers...)

I once went out with a round number. :biggrin-new:

But on the subject of linguistic corruption, here's a list of vintage colloquialisms for your enjoyment.

FWIW, the studies I have seen note that there is a strong correlation between mathematical ability and musical ability but nothing that suggest a causation or why they are linked. Thus if you have one then you are "more likely" to have the other but "more likely" could be as low as a 51% probability.

As a mathematican by education I also need to point out that there is a big difference between arithmetic and mathematics. The former is a very mechanical skill. The latter has more to do with how someone thinks, organizes and solves problems. It's the difference between knowing that 1+1 = 2 and proving that 1+1 always equals 2 for the plus operator defined on the set of natural numbers.

I remember this from my EE days in uni (never used it in the real world).

The square root of -1 is the imaginary number "i" i.e. i x i = -1. "-i" is also used & is also the square root of -1.

Man I didn't want to have to go there but now you go an' bring up them 'maginary numbers.
That ain't fightin' fair.
Therefore, I gonna hit ya wit' Geometry.
Prove that the volume of the universe is equal to the square root of pi to the infinite power.
(hint: It might be quicker and easier to disprove it. Why I always loved Geometry.)

OK guys now you're making my head explode. Bottom line, numbers don't mean nothing until they mean something. 2 + 2 = 4. 4 what? 4 Guilds, or 4 gorillas.

A little bit like knowing what mode you play in, doesn't mean jack until it actually sounds good..... (couldn't resist the analogy) :rugby:
