I can never pick just one movie, but in the humor genre... since we're talking about 11/11/11 today... "This is Spinal Tap" is definitely on my list of all-time favorites!

War movies. 'Saving Private Ryan', the series 'Band of Brothers' and an old one starring Robert Mitchem 'The True Story of GI Joe'. Several others - 'Enemy at the Gate', 'It came Upon a Midnight Clear', 'Patton'.

I can offer a package deal and combine an all-time favorite movie (albeit made for TV) with an all-time favorite book by James McMurtry's dad, Larry:
Lonesome Dove

So you get two for one!

Well, where to start... but, top end of the list:

-American Graffiti (love the story of Lucas's stand-up brawl with the studio over their not wanting to release it. He lived on the proceeds for a long time. Made Star Wars on the income, so the tale goes).

-The Straight Story. David Lynch's take on a true story. Sissy Spacek and Harry Dean Stanton don't do it any harm, either. Brings ears to my ties every time.

-Scent of a Woman (agree with CA-35, including that). One of my favourite movie lines "The day you stop looking is the day you die..."
