Not one that might have been given or handed down to you, but the first one you bought for yourself, with your own hard-earned.

Mine was a brand new 1969 Gibson J-45. I spent a lot of long and late days/nights with that guitar before deciding that I wanted to keep going. I think a first guitar has the potential to make or break you, and that Gibson was user-friendly and forgiving, to a point. And then I sold it to a good friend....I wonder if he still has it. :?:

**As with many threads, this might have been covered before, but let's dig it up anyway, for rainy days and Sundays!

An old Goya (can't remember model) won in a poker game in Southeast Asia in 1971. Wish I still had it for sentimental reasons...

A beautiful sunburst acoustic guitar in 1966...don't know the make or model. It belonged to a neighbour of ours who was into Hank Snow. He taught me a few basics and then I was off to guitar lessons.

The first guitar I bought with my own cash...

I was 17... and carried her home on the bus in a loaner pasteboard case, because I couldn't afford the hardshell 'til I got my next paycheck.

Absolutely! She's #2 in my signature.

I thought so, but I just wanted to check.

I've said it before but allow me one more shot: you have one of the finest displays/arrays of Guilds I've seen. It's a veritable tour de force of artistry and 'Guild love' and extremely well done. I hope everyone here has a look at least once.
Good job, Dave.

Maybe I can get a few pointers,
Joe

My first guitar was a Holiday acoustic that my parents bought with S&H Green Stamps back in 1967. As I said in a previous post, it has an action the closely resembles an egg slicer. In about a month I had calluses on my finger tips that you could use to cut diamonds. Funny thing is…I still have the guitar. No…I never play it. I just don’t seem to ever get that angry with myself.
I consider I earned it because I had to lick all those darn stamps and put them in the books! Tongue still tastes like glue! :p

The first one I earned money for a bought was a Greco 12 String. Sold it long ago.

Mine was a little Gibson B25. It was a great guitar to learn how to play on. I wish I still had it.

An extremely cheap plywood guitar with cheese-slicer action that I received as a Christmas gift when I was a pre-teen.

I loved it with all my heart and could hardly put it down!

A few years later I had saved up enough to buy a Madeira "by Guild", it said on the label. Still made of plywood, but a step up in playability and sound.

Man, some of ya'll had some nice guitars for your firsts. I had some crappy Dean acoustic that had the same pointy headstock as all their shredders. I hated it! Eventually I got a Squire Strat and I pretty much quit playing acoustic for years until I got a decent Martin 00-15. That Dean was horrendous.

Being a "little" older when I re-started my playing career (  ), my first guitar bought with my own hard earned was a Martin D-35. And yes, it's in my sig.

My father wouldn't consider buying a guitar of any kind, and was highly critical of guitars. My parents were from the Glenn Miller generation, and held disdain for that terrible rock n' roll noise.

So, (mid 1960's) I stumbled upon (garbage picked) a Stella, and two aquaintences gave me a few used, non-matching strings.
I played that git with a combo of nylon and steel strings, and eventually passed it on to someone else whose parents wouldn't buy them a guitar.

First song that I learned: Gloria, and then a neighbor gave me an old songbook that her kids tore up. I learned a lot of chords from that book, plus A Summer Song by Chad & Jeremy, from a page still intact.

Later on, I became employed in the Summers, and moved up to a used (Les Paul copy) electric git, a used Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb amp, and a new Japanese built acoustic 6 string Guitar.
Early 70's, I bought My Crestwood 12 string, which My son still owns, and he learned to play guitar on that super-sized axe.

FWIW: Whenever I'm up in NY State, I continue to have guitar sessions with the friend who got me started, back in the 60's. Of course, He plays on a custom Huss & Dalton Brazilian, Collings, Martins, Gibsons, Taylors, etc, and I have Guilds and Taylors. Quite a step upward! :)

I believe that "Gloria" was probably the first song I learned also.  A three chord wonder.

My first was a used Harmony dreadnaught. Don't remember the model #. Usual horrible action. This being the late 60's I decided it would be cool to give it a psychedelic paint job. I'm sure it did wonders for the sound. Or maybe not as I'm sure the tone was pretty feeble. My next guitar was an Aria dread, bought in the early '70's, that I have very fond memories of. Again not sure of the model, solid or laminate, etc.. But it was a way big upgrade from the Harmony.
