Thank you all for your opinions and Nigel for referencing that thread. Ok, I am officially looking for a Westerly D40. I lean towards the Westerly's only because of the few I have played I really enjoyed. Admittedly, I have never bought a "new" guitar. I negotiated a pretty good price on a 2009 NOS D40BG last night on Ebay for $900. I guess, I rather comb the ends of earth looking for a good deal on a used one thats opened up a little. I dont know if I can even get one for that but, I have more time than money.

Thanks,
Tony
Tony, that's a pretty damn good price for a new D-40 guitar. You might want to grab that and maybe return it if you don't like it. Is it really "NOS" or is it used? If NOS, you should be getting a valid warrantee from the factory.

Redfin has been referred to the Never Ending Thread but the short answer is that both factories make/made excellent guitars but prices for vintage Westerly's are usually lower than comparable New Hartford models. Part of your answer lies in whether you place any value on the "new guitar smell", a HSC that was selected by the manufacturer (not all used cases are "original" and some cases fit and protect better than others) and a warranty.

Good luck in the hunt.

I beg your pardon, this thread HAS ended (man I hope...) and it did so precisely where some genius on page 22 predicted it would.

I think I'll just use the emoticons.......no, no.....they can get me in trouble too I'm sure. :D What if I just sign "West".......no, I won't be recognizing "north", "south" or "east".

All in fun guys.

I've owned Guild guitars, acoustic and electric, made in every factory. All were stellar!

Hi, Tony;

your question is one of the very ground and bottom questions concerning the Guilds, indeed. - Now my opinion: Though I have alway taken opportunity to play new Guilds anywhere I could - and I was definitely always pleased (!!!) - I still would prefer a Westerly of Guild Golden Era, as long as it is in good condition and the neck definitely straight!

Well, a Guild is a Guild...nuff said. Westerly, Corona, etc. I think they are all fine guitars. Some are better than others. As a guitar "ages" it takes on a character all they're own. I don't think the new ones have the "tone" that an older instrument has. Sometimes its not that noticable. They just sound better as they get older. By a new one now...it will sound good, maybe great...but in 10 or 20 yrs, it will REALLY sound great.

Now that I've sold my way down to just my '08 Tacoma D-55, I'm falling in love with it all over again...

That's the way it happens when you thin the herd.
It's tough spreading the love around and there's more bonding time when it's one-on-one with your only one!

Enjoy that beauty,
Joe

I think that a NH D40 Standard is as nice a new guitar you can get for the outlay...if I were to replace my Gibson J-30, that is what I would buy.

Now, depending on snow, I have two sidekicks who are taking me to a boo-teek store tonight to try Colling'es, Huss & Dalton's and who knows what else. Not in a position to buy right this moment, but a night out with the boys and pre-engineering for the Gibson's eventual replacement. I want to try a D50 Standard or F30RCE (but where are they? ) and I am unanimous in that position... :)

We need to help you fix that. You shouldn't have any money when we're done.
Also note I bought all mine new and that NOS D40 is priced right at $900.00 . There's just something about being the original owner, and getting that "virgin bride" feeling when you open up the case for the first few years. In addition to the peace of mind of a warranty. :D

All I can say is be patient. I bought my 1980 Westerley D40 for 1k. It's an awesome guitar. They're out there. I bought mine locally so I could try it. It was almost mint and it took a little playing to open it up, but after a week of pourring love into it, it was really singing.

Its almost not a fair comparison.
Westerly have at 16 years age on them
New guitar need the top to open up and wood to age in.
The question is what will New Hartford Guitar sound like in 20 years.

My money is on it sounding like a 20 year old Guild.
