Thinking about adding another guitar to keep me from wearing out my Westerly DV52. I mostly srum and learning some flatpicking. Is the Westerly era considered Guilds best or are they pretty similar to new. I am looking at D40 or D55. Your thoughts and opinions welcome.

Thanks,
Tony

West is a little bit biased.

Personally the new ones are fabulous, but the value sure is in favour of Westerly's, IMO.

For good strumming and picking, looking into the F-47 or, of course the D-40!

I'll cast my vote for Westerly, all things considered.
I've had a couple of New Hartfords in hand and they didn't exactly sweep me off my feet; although, I'm certainly happy that Guild is making a comeback!

There seems to be a noticeable aura about Westerly Guilds that might be difficult to describe....it's just a feeling, and I'm hooked on that feeling!

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I think Guilds built anywhere are all the product of fine craftsmanship, all built equally, by equal craftsman, in equal facilities.

Can't argue with that Joe.

If you have the ability to hold them and play them, one of them will persuade you more than the other.

Hi Tony. Welcome to LTG! At the risk of appearing rude, I would refer you to this thread:

The above thread goes on, for some 31 excruciating pages. I suggest you browse through that thread. Between the veers, you'll find a number of viewpoint regarding your question.

Boy, it's gonna be hard to improve on that DV-52... :D

Everybody loves the old D-25's including me (but the neck is chunkier than the DV-52)

I'd like to get my hands on a 90's JF-30, they're pretty sweet, not a lot of deluxe geegaws but they sure can belt out a tune!

The new D-40 had an Adirondack top.
This would be a good reason for me to choose new, along with the warranty you would have with a new Guild.

Now a D-55 would be different for me.
A good broke in D-55 is real sweet.

In all seriousness, if you mainly strum but are starting to flatpick, then a D40 would be the way to go. And a nice way to complement your rosey dread. new versus Westerly is entirely up to you. Main difference is sitka versus red spruce top. That is a deal breaker for some. I have played new and they are very nice. I have gotten better deals on the used market (both Westerly). I don't think I have an allegiance to Westerly, but they made some damn fine guitars.

I have no allegiance to Westerly Guilds....I just prefer them to the other guitars. Perhaps I'm keyed in to a certain mystique that comes with them.
I've said before that there's something special about a guitar that comes to you, already filled with songs and stories from where it's been, who played it, etc.
It might come to you used, but it was well cared for by a previous owner; and when you pick it up and have it in your hands and begin to add your own music, you'll know.

Goodnight my Guilded friends. It's been a day!

The only guitar I ever bought new was my '65 D50, which continues to improve with age. A new guitar won't sound like that for decades. I don't see any advantage to buying new, other than the opportunity to pay too much for an instrument you're afraid to touch.

The whole "which factory is better" discussion is kinda silly when no two guitars are alike. Beginning or advanced players may have different agendas, but the program is the same... pick it up and play it! If it speaks to you, buy it. Each factory made some great guitars and some clunkers. There's no harm in narrowing the search, but my daddy told me that an intimate relationship should be based on a hands-on decision.

Good advice here and in the other thread referenced earlier.

From a utilitarian point of view, the old vs. new question is the same with Guilds as it is with most other guitars. However, there really isn't a significant question about quality from any given period (you do find that with some of hte other brands). Nor is there the sentimentality of some golden-era period that you might get with a old Martin or Gibson.

I tend to agree with the general concensus that you can't get a better value than a Westerly Guild. At least compared to new, USA-built guitars... pick your brand. That said, if you like new stuff, be *sure* to check out the Standard Series guitars and think about value. Plus, New Hartford has recently introduced some cutaway versions that have never existed before.

The GAD series, however, represents new product that is among the best of the Chinese-made guitars, loosely based on the original Guild designs.

Best of luck in your decision!

And, West, that is one bias that I can fully support. :)

Thank you all for your opinions and Nigel for referencing that thread. Ok, I am officially looking for a Westerly D40. I lean towards the Westerly's only because of the few I have played I really enjoyed. Admittedly, I have never bought a "new" guitar. I negotiated a pretty good price on a 2009 NOS D40BG last night on Ebay for $900. I guess, I rather comb the ends of earth looking for a good deal on a used one thats opened up a little. I dont know if I can even get one for that but, I have more time than money.

Thanks,
Tony
