Several years ago I spent $50 on a tuner, a clip-on Onboard Research Intellitouch. Best one at the time. Still kinda nice, hardshell case, red backlighting, don't have to plug it in or be in isolation to use a mic input.

Recently bought a Snark for $15, and it works better. More sensitive, picks up the vibrations better without having to re-position it, and seems to be calibrated a little tighter. Not surprising, as technology has likely improved since I bought the Intellitouch.

I know there are a lot of them out there now, but the little blue Snark seems to be the best for my purposes.

That's kind of a Snarky recommendation, don't you think? (Sorry, somebody had to say it).

Actually, that's good to know. I haven't tried one of the clip-on tuners yet, but I'll be thinking seriously about the Snark now.

I have 4 snark tuners. I love them. Great tuner for a killer price.
Check out Amazon for great prices.
Note that there are 3 different models.
The cheapest one does what I need and it is Blue in color.
The Red one had a mic and metronome as added features. I don't need either feature myself.

Actually, the Black Snark is the bare-bones tuner, the Blue is in the middle and the red one is the top one. I'm referring to the clip-on tuners, they have a blue one that's not a clip-on as well. Of course, the price difference is only a $1-$2 between models. My blue one has a tap-metronome, pitch calibration and transpose feature as well as standard 440 tuning, what's not to like about that? The black one doesn't have those extra features, but for a buck more I figured what the heck?

The metronome is kinda cool, you can measure the bpm at the beginning of the song and later prove to your friends that they sped up the tempo as the song progressed!

Good to know, Dreadnut. I have an Intellitouch as well that I bought five or six years ago. It is sensitive enough to use with my solid body electric and has a lot of features I don't use (but intend to learn how), like being able to store different tunings.

It's been relatively reliable, though it lost a tiny nut that holds the bolt that allows the tuner to turn on it's hinge at the clip (if you have one you know what I'm talking about). I had to go to a specialty hardware to get a replacement.

I checked the Intellitouch website and it looks like they've made lots of changes in the past few years, including redesigning the clips and introducing rechargeable tuners (though I don't remember battery life ever being an issue), while the prices ($40-$55) are still about the same as when I first got one. They've even built one in combination with a capo!

Checked out the Snark website and it looks to be a somewhat comparable device at about $10 less on average. I'll have to try one out the next time I get to a music store. Thanks for the tip!

I have many tuners...Boss Tu-12, TCE Polytune, Turbo Tuner ST-200.

Then I bought a Blue Snark. Then I bought 5 more Snarks. I plan on giving 3 away as gifts. Snarks are cheap, accurate enough and they work on acoustics or electrics, basses included

I'm a bit like Russ, have a few tuners, including the Turbo Tuner, which I use on my electrics, great for setting up intonation etc.

I ordered two red ones a few months back but received blue instead & the guy gave me $10 off so I kept them & gave one to my god-daughter. Works great on the acoustics but sometimes the low E is a little slow to catch.

I've ordered another 2 Red ones as apart from the features above, I've heard they have an extended range over it's blue counterpart, so might be useful for 12 strings, basses, mandolins & similar.

They are so cheap that it almost makes sense to have one in every acoustic guitar case. Hopefully they are durable enough & last for a while!

Anyone like this one?

I like mine, but I still find that my old Korg CA-10 is my favorite "tuney thing."

Wow, great price and free shipping! I think I need another one at that price! Should get a couple for Christmas gifts.

There's certainly no excuse for being out of tune any more, is there? I hate it when I diplomatically suggest someone's guitar may be out of tune and they give me that deer-in-the-headlights look  I gotta get one of those "Tune It Or Die!" t-shirts :D

Grot

Sounds just like one of my friends. Well, almost. He plays a 12-string and he once told me : "I like to tune the pairs of strings so each one is just a little bit off from the other..." No kidding.

Anyone tried the new D'Addario (well, Planet Waves actually) one designed by Ned Steinberger? It's very small and solves the biggest problem I have with those clip-on tuners, which is that they're butt ugly.

Funny, I think the Snark looks cool! But I don't leave it on my headstock after I've tuned, either.

Does that Planet Waves tuner display the note right-side-up? All the pictures show it upside down. Anoother thing I like about the snark is it has complete freedom of movement so no matter where you put it you can always see the display right-side-up.

The blue one is under 9 bucks including shipping at Amazon. The blue one will also compensate for a capo up to the fourth fret. I like mine pretty good.
