oh John,
that is a beautiful amplifier! a few years ago I exchanged a lot of correspondence with Rob at Buffalo amps, he's a very cool young man. I'd like to get one of his amps....never seen one out here in california but I have a feeling he's been able to capture that old gibby tweed sound....

Hi CE; for a while, Rob was running a Yahoo-driven Vintage Gibson Amp Bulletin Board. There's a set of 'albums' there; pic collections put up by Rob and the other members ... practically all the Gibson product line there through the end of the tweed era. If you're interested, PM default ... he has the link. Sort of a pain in the tailpiece signing on. Yahoo is so frequently hacked, it has all kind of security loops to get an ID/Pword ... a real headache but an interesting enough place.

Early '60s tweed version GA40 Les Paul on eBay. Mussta been sitting on the garage floor when the water heater let go ... water stains up both sides but electronics are all original is as Jensen P12R speaker. Can't tell what stuff is on output transformer; paper? Ju-ju leaking from a capacitor? Control panel is pretty rough including missing all five original knobs. For those of you who haven't plowed your way through this entire thread, the '50s version of this amp was 're-issued' by Victoria Amps as the Electro King; ... a few tweaks but more or less as designed by Seth Lover over 50 years ago.

End of it looks curled up, so I'm voting old masking tape. Additionally, it looks like it's missing the four corner bolts that hold the sucker together, which would explain the need for tape. So, who took apart the transformer and why?

Bolt holes or heads? Who knows. The Gibson marking is cooling off ... with its tatted covering, this one might go cheap ... :?

A Tale of Two '50s GA40 Les Pauls ...and a GA40 tweed dragon.

Two GA40s ... both in Tampa FL ... and both on/off Craigslist and eBay:

LP(a) on Craigslist (also now on eBay) looks like this:

3n73mc3pd5O15T35Paa1p78b00f791e0f11e1.jpg

and LP(b) on Craigslist for Best Offer looks like this:

3ka3o73l35Pf5R95Saa210b061b3aeb5117f8.jpg

Both in good/vg condition with mostly/all original parts showed up about 3 months ago at the same time with asking prices +/- $1,600 which is pretty much consistent with the GA40 prices recorded in this thread ... but as they were breaking from the gate, neither of them sold. Since then, the two have spiralled down in price to the point where LPa currently has an eBay BIN/BO of $900 and LPb is just plain looking for offers.

The amp was was produced in four cosmetic versions with the '60-'62 tweed versions typically selling for less than the original (LPs a & b above), maroon over nubby tan/white fabric, and the black over tweed like Mad Dog's. (original not shown below and caption on source webpage has a mistake; the two on the bottom are mid-'50s, not mid-'60s)

Gibson-GA40-amps.jpg

Enter the dragon and with an absolutely killer auction presentation of text and pics: a '60-'62 collector/museum-grade tweed that sold for an eye-popping $3,650 on eBay  and it looks like ......

LPC.jpg

Their original aversion to shipping put the two GA40 sellers in price competition; hoping to sell locally, their amps appear shop/eye-worn ... the Gibson market is so sluggish, it's hard to tell whether the collapse in price is a market or a seller thing .... but the dragon proves that A+ gear still brings A+ prices ... wow.
