I'm not saying I can sing but I do it anyway. I find it easier to play the notes I'm singing ala George Benson. For examples, my jamband plays Pretzel Logic and Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys and I sing both. I play the melody at a low a volume as I can and still hear it a little and it almost keeps me on key. lol
I can play lead and sing but most of the riffage is done as fills and stuff that carries on under my voice is just easy and I guess I've been playing lead so long I don't have to think about it.
There is a Dead tune we play, China Cat, where Jerry's part is essentially a bassline and it took me a long time to be able to sing that and play the riff at the same time. Another one is the end of Hey Bulldog, Beatles, I double the bassline at the coda and it's hard for me to maintain that and sing just the backup "Hey Bulldog" line. I often blow out of it then just punt and vamp on the B7 chord.
Our bassist can sing lead on songs with a fairly easy bassline.
