An old friend spent years trading his musical talent for affection, food, and a place to sleep. His typical term lasted about 11 months, or until the love of his life figured out that his only skills were drinking and writing songs. He would be out on the street for less than 24 hours until he found another lonely heart to write songs for. He liked really, really, really large women and we all thought he was making the dating scene a safer place for the rest of us.
I noticed that the guitar player in the pic is alone and all of the girls have dates. That is probably closer to reality.

Years ago I would get hired by sorta-wealthy people to play classical guitar at their house parties and the scene looked like the cartoon above. My teacher had so many gigs he started tossing lots of them to me. It was a lot of fun and the people were always really nice.

I just spent too much time focused on the image. Hot dogs and Coca Cola although if you want to see something else maybe you can. The stereotype that only "trashy" women drink directly from the bottle is reinforced. Everyone is "well dressed". There are clothing colors that I have never seen in real life and combinations I would not consider wearing. The guitarist is alone although maybe that's his boyfriend hovering in the background.? The more I look the more unreal it seems to me but it is strangely captivating.
As for the question I was never talented or popular enough to think playing would help me meet girls although I should note that I met Mrs. Fro. because we were both singing in a chorus. I will endorse the idea that performing music brings people together.

There is the famous story about Duke Ellington who, as a teenager, initially hated piano and wanted to be a baseball player. But he was forced into piano lessons by his mother. At parties he was always jealous of the stars of the school baseball team who were surrounded by admiring girls. One day at a party, he wandered away from the group where he was being ignored and found a piano in another room. He sat down and started to play. His attention was focused on the piano, so when he looked up he was surprised. There was a group girls standing around him, listening with rapt attention. He never looked back.

If we are really going to scrutinize the drawing, it appears that the guitar player is playing an unfamiliar chord...all four fingers are on the low E and A strings! Could he possibly be faking it???

Artist is Mac Conner and the image was part of a Coca Cola ad that was published (at least) in Seventeen magazine in April 1958.

You need to read more. I though I admitted to singing five services in seven days ending on Easter.
But, for all practical purposes, and many impractical ones, I can sing or play bass but not both at the same time.
It is probably one of them there fancy jazz chords.
I never got a girl because I play the guitar, but I have to be careful I don't lose the one I have because I play guitar. That's a reality and my only fear.
