I do believe that Guild has the most beautiful sunbursts of any manufacturer, and these guitars prove it.

Some of you by now have read about my '63 DE-400 and how it announced its arrival from down the block. Strange but true!

So now I've got another whopper to tell, and this one is just as strange but just as true:

For the longest time I wondered to myself how, where, when, or if it was even possible that I might find somebody somewhere on this earth who was eager to trade my 1980 SF-4 for their genuine 60s Starfire. That certainly seems like the kind of long shot that never actually comes to pass and after keeping my eye out for quite some time and sending out some probing emails, I finally resigned myself to the notion that it would never happen.

So I put my SF-4 up for sale and found a buyer in due course.

On the very morning that I reluctantly hauled my Guild to the Post Office, I received an email from a fella in the next state asking me if I'd be interested in buying his '66 Starfire IV - for quite a bit less $$ than I had just sold my SF-4! I drove directly from the Post Office to his office and bought myself this...

At the last possible moment this turned out even better than a straight-across trade, and once again proved that occasionally even the most far-fetched rock 'n' roll dreams do come through!

Billy,

I too have a 66 SFIV and a 74 s-100...Do you think the magic will translate to me getting a DE next?

Off to the front window to see if there is a truck pulling up to my house with one now........

in the meantime, here is my 66 SF

Wow - that it some gorgeous specimen!

I can only wish for you to score a DE as well. What a spectacular guitar it is! Mine is with my luthier right now as it required some binding to be re-glued, and I'm anxiously awaiting its return.

Thanks guys, the 66 SF is my birth year and is so mint it is unreal. Not even a hint of belt buckle scratches. I wish I held up equally as good.

To those who have a SF and a Duane Eddie...What are some of the main differences? I do have Han's book on my kindle, but would like to hear opinions of those in the know...I feel the beginnings of GAS starting...What made you get a DE when you already had a semi-hollow?

Larry:

Lots of differences between them - the DE is a full hollowbody, for starters. Also the neck join on the DE is at the 16th fret rather than the 18th fret on the Starfire, which gives it a considerably different feel. The depth of the body is also different, but I don't have the DE here with me to give you the measurements.

Add to this the completely different style of pickups - DeArmond Dynasonics (single coil) vs. Guild mini-humbuckers - and the Bigsby rather than the harp tailpiece, and you're looking at a whole other animal!

Now that I've obviously convinced you that you simply have to have both, why are you still sitting here reading this and not already out on the hunt??!?

I guess I should have looked at the book. Wow, completely different beast. LMK if you post any clips, I'd love to hear the DE!

Have fun!

I'm picking my lower jaw back up from the floor after seeing your 66 Larry.... Unbelievable.
Even more mint than the mint 66 discussed on another thread somewhere, from an Ebay posting.
What's up with all these mint 66's?
