Some of you by now have read about my '63 DE-400 and how it announced its arrival from down the block. Strange but true!

So now I've got another whopper to tell, and this one is just as strange but just as true:

For the longest time I wondered to myself how, where, when, or if it was even possible that I might find somebody somewhere on this earth who was eager to trade my 1980 SF-4 for their genuine 60s Starfire. That certainly seems like the kind of long shot that never actually comes to pass and after keeping my eye out for quite some time and sending out some probing emails, I finally resigned myself to the notion that it would never happen.

So I put my SF-4 up for sale and found a buyer in due course.

On the very morning that I reluctantly hauled my Guild to the Post Office, I received an email from a fella in the next state asking me if I'd be interested in buying his '66 Starfire IV - for quite a bit less $$ than I had just sold my SF-4! I drove directly from the Post Office to his office and bought myself this...

At the last possible moment this turned out even better than a straight-across trade, and once again proved that occasionally even the most far-fetched rock 'n' roll dreams do come through!

That's a great story. I had the a similar experience last year, when I swapped a '74 Starfire 4 for a '69. For my tastes, the '69 is much better (and looks a lot like your '66).

Littlesongs is right - it does involve eye of newt!

He is the "Man with the Golden Touch"
I prefer your previous sobriquet - just call me "Goldfinger"!

That's a very cool development. Trading is as much mindset as process. Strange how when you open yourself up to such surprises by pursuing trades, they can sometimes happen in unexpected ways. Beautiful SF!

MD: One of my very few other trades ever was for your '74 S-100, and I'm still very happy that we did that one. Thanks again!

Treem: Thanks kindly!

Walrus: Whoa! I am truly humbled. Thank you, sir!

But credit where credit is due - you guys provide a lot of the inspiration and the impetus that spurs me on.

(Of course I don't relate the stories here that apply to non-Guild gear. Trust me, there are a few corkers!)

Here is a little magic of my own...

Earlier this year I was fortunate to be able to get a GSR Starfire VI, and it is an amazing guitar! This past Sunday I came upon the new GSR T-500, which is the type of GSR I was hoping they would make. I had to find a way to afford it, so I found that way and plunked down my deposit. While initially thinking that there would be no edition number on the label I was later informed that my information was wrong. I then called the dealer from which I purchased my T-500 to find out which number is on my new guitar. I was told it is 2/25, which is very cool. Even better is that my Starfire VI is 2/18. What are the odds of that?

Nice, guildman! That's a great stroke of luck!

Any math people out there that can answer the question?

Odds: 1 out of (18 + 25)? But I think this only works for the odds that you got a number 2 guitar, not the odds of getting a number 2 guitar for both kinds...

Math is not my strong suit.

I studied statistics many years ago, but my first instinct is that the odds are 1/18 x 1/25, or 1/450. I'm sure there are those among us that can verify or reject my statistics and math.

guildman,

Tell you what I don't understand about the series thing, though I'm happy the sequence is printed on those oval labels... How do they know they're gonna' make 25 of these. Maybe it's inaccurate. Are they building the entire run all at once before any of them are labeled and shipped? Maybe Bing's post about the new GSR T-500 indicates that they were all planned at the same time and grouped together.

I think I'll ask this for LMG. Obviously, this is nothing new in the guitar biz, but I wonder how much you can trust this info on the label.

That's my best guess as well although it is also true that, given the first guitar already has a number, the odds of getting the same number for the second guitar are merely 1/25. It's the difference between two random numbers that match and one "fixed" number and drawing a random that matches.

It's a good question, so let's ask it, but I think at some point they know the size of the run and that is before/in time to put the labels on. Wasn't the LMG II giveaway a GSR "second"? Wasn't there also a GSR run that got reduced to two because the ebony was not available in sufficient quality/quantity?

Personally, from a marketing perspective they need to announce the edition size and explicitly limit it or lower prices. If they want to make another 25 GSR T-500's then call the second batch Series II and change one tiny feature like the control knobs. IMO. YMMV.
