Just jumping back into the fray.. RE rap music, AKA hip hop. In a random place I saw someone make a pretty good point; the Hall has inducted all sorts of non-"rock n roll" artists, and we didn't hear much bitching about those, IE, soul, country, and other genres. Hip hop can be played by a band, and not all of it is the dung on top 40 radio. I personally love Jurassic 5 and the Beastie Boys (who played instruments BTW) and Grandmaster Flash, but the majority is garbage, just like I think the majority of any genre played on commercial radio is garbage. The good stuff is usually someone you've never heard! Now, is hip hop rock n roll? No. Does it have roots in it? Yes. Does it take skill? MC'ing.. yes (at least good MC'ing). Turntablism.. a huge YES. One is a vocal artistry, the other is most definitely a musical instrument, of sorts, that requires just as much practice and deftness as any other instrument. I've seen artists like Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow do things that I KNOW what they are doing, yet I still was dumbfounded, just like watching EVH or John 5 play guitar. I KNOW what they are doing and I still am shaking my head saying "how"!?!?!? I can definitely see how people are angry about inducting rap artists when there are so many overlooked and deserving rock groups still out there, and if your exposure to it is stupid crap like P Diddy and 2 Chainz.
