Steve Miller had just performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, but he wasn’t finished.
In fact, he was just getting started. The new inductee ripped the rock hall in a backstage interview, calling the evening a “lazy” night with “a bunch of fat cats” that was tantamount to a bad reality show — only he used a stronger epithet than “bad.”
“I don’t know why I was nominated for this because I said this for 30 years,” the 72-year-old musician said in the interview. “I don’t get along with the people running it. When I found out about it, I felt like I was in a (expletive) reality TV show.”
Of the evening as a whole, Miller said: “It wasn’t very overwhelming. It was a lazy kind of night with a bunch of fat cats at the dinner table. It’s not a real pleasant experience to tell you the truth.”
Asked why, he said: “The reason … is because they make it difficult for the artists. I think it’s time for the people running this to turn it over to new people because it doesn’t need to be this difficult. You don’t need to insult every artist that comes along.” He added: “People in the crews are nice, but people that are running it at the top have no concept of how to run a concert or how to run an award ceremony or how to take care of artists.”
The rock hall issued a statement Saturday in response to Miller’s comments. “Rock and roll can ignite many opinions,” it said. “It’s what makes it so great. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was honored to induct Steve Miller last night.”
In the interview, Miller explained that he only appeared at the ceremony for the sake of his fans. “My fans take it seriously,” he said. “I really didn’t want to show up.”

Entering the rock hall along with Miller at the ceremony at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center was the rap group N.W.A., along with 1970s-era rock acts Cheap Trick, Chicago and Deep Purple. N.W.A., which opted not to perform at the ceremony, was inducted by one of music’s hottest artists, Kendrick Lamar, who said the group had “proved to every kid in the ghetto that you could be successful and still have your voice while doing it.”
Miller and his band, who are preparing for a summer tour, played the crowd-pleasing hits “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Rock ‘n’ Me Baby” and “The Joker” to an audience of fellow musicians and industry professionals sitting at tables, and ticket-buying members of the public in the surrounding stands.
“If you listened to the radio, you listened to Steve Miller,” said the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who inducted Miller with his bandmate Patrick Carney.
Backstage, Miller even questioned the purpose of the rock hall.
“You tell me what the hell is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and what does it do besides talk about itself and sell postcards?” he said.
HBO will air highlights of the show on April 30._

Associated Press writers David Bauder and Jocelyn Noveck contributed to this story.

I am a big Steve Miller fan, and i'm sure some of his points are valid...and some RNRHOF years are better than others...but in 2002 the RNRHOF got the Talking Heads to reunite for one night, and for that I am forever grateful!

even Byrne's Guild comes to the party!

The RRHOF is a joke in many respects, especially the nominating and final acceptance voting. I love Steve Miller, and his showing up "at the ceremony for the sake of his fans", proves what a class act he is. Saw him just last Summer and he was fantastic. The overlooked for too long before inducting and the still overlooked artist lists are way too long to even bother starting.

Well said, Alan. It's definitely a joke, but instead of blowing it off, he attended and performed because he knew his fans were there. Can't knock that. Too may artists have dissed their fan base by not showing up, or refusing to play with one another, etc.

Hear, hear.
It seems more and more that halls of fame and the endless awards shows are more self-congratulatory than anything else. I guess that's why I usually have better things to do than watch them, like play a Guild for instance or rearrange my sock drawer....
:tongue-new:

Also, how did Rap make its way into the R&RHOF?

I've seen him many times especially early on in his career when I still lived in Wisconsin. One of my personal all-time faves for sure.

Siloing music is the main beef I have with the R&RHOF, the country music equivalent, etc. I don't listen to or categorize music that way. Then of course there's the self-congratulatory aspect. The R&RHOF began with Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone and some of his buds deciding to put their own favorite musicians & bands on a pedestal and then toasting themselves on their great taste. It has broadened since then, though I suspect due more to outside criticism than to broadening of that taste.

Levon Helm blew off his ceremony, citing similar reasons. If you get a chance to watch the netflix movie re Levon.

Just a little veer here to ask, Clay, if you're changing your user name from Westerly Wood to something like....Santa Wood, perhaps? :stupid:

Curious Joe

I like the sound of Santa Wood :). No, I have not changed much. I just do not play the BR anymore. But I take care of it, make sure it is properly humidified in its case, and will change the strings like once a year. I do hope one of my kids will take a shine to it.

Saw Steve Miller back in '69 (high school graduation year).
Still love Sailor, which includes a lot of Boz Scaggs.

Done with him after that, but he's certainly earned the right to speak his mind.

The day will come when you go back to that case, open it, take the D-25 out and strum it a bit and realize what you have.

Oh, I know what I have. The tone, power and playability just cannot compare to the D/PWM. I am sure I will play it from time to time. So far, my kids have little interest in the guitar, most likely cause Dad plays his too much :)

Could I be one of your kids? I would take a shine to it. :tongue-new:

Joe

Oh I would Joe or anyone else on LTG that I have known for a while now if they were down and out, meaning no Guild. Alas, I got to keep for either kid to adopt. I got so much "stupid" money invested into the BR as well, so it pays to just leave it for the kids.
