To the eye, fret hammering did not make a visual difference. The few still looked popped up in the middle.
Immediately after, it was sounding worse!!
So I let the Starfire stand for a few days in the case at tension with neck set really straight and got 6/64 action on it. Thus/Fri/Sat/Sun.
I figured I needed the nut end of the finger board action lower and the bridge side higher to help with the issue.
Monday it is now 90% better, which makes me think this is a neck/weather issue.
Puzzling, but glad it is very playable again. I still don't know for sure what was going on.

was it one of the small screws in the truss rod cover? i think it was maybe that, or one of the small screws in the corners of the pickup surround.

dont make them so tight that the head of the screw pops off! if u hear the sound again, just tape over those screws so they cant rattle, and see if u still hear it. tape all of the screws, if none rattle, untape them one at time until u hear it

or possibly the truss rod cover itself

i had that on an older hoboken acoustic Guild. it was super annoying. the TRC was not snug to the head, and the screw was stiff, definitely did not want to try to tighten it. i could stop it from rattling with the tie lace from a guitar strap when i had a strap on it, under the TRC to snug it up. anyway that was an extreme example of what im talking about. but i also had an Allen Woody Epiphone bass that was doing what yours is doing, and it was the screws in the corners of the pick up surround

Truss rod cover is off. I never keep it on.
I will check the pickup screws. Thanks!
