Ok, this little girl has been mistreated. (bah BAH BAH bah)

The EMG's aren't original and were literally chopped out of the old guitar. As a result, the braid that forms the shielding and negative power ends right in the humbucker cavity, No juice, no go. Fortunately, I have some 2 conductor, foil shielded wire that can be used to extend the pup wires. I figure that I bought it from a guy who bought it from the bay and found out it didn't work. Maybe some parts got robbed. <shrug> The guy who owned it before that removed the pups  and trem or- who knows?

In any case, The wood is good and all I need to do is put some elbow grease into her.

My Strat is starting to get nervous.

No problem is too great for the solder-enabled ... too bad about the 'I got screwed so so will you' attitude. Like buying oregano thinking that it isn't and selling it knowing that it is ... <sigh>

Classic. Like Default says when you spend $100, you've got to expect some work. A full disclosure is nice though. "I got it from a friend in the cities. It's totally legit."

No cracks in the wood, no wear on the frets, everything else is fixable. If I were in the resale business, I'd never make any money on it, but I'm not in the resale business.

Bleh. After working on the "secret project"(almost ready for the variac), I spent some time with the S-281. The pup height adjustment screwheads are all stripped out to varying degrees. These EMGs may be period correct, but they don't fit the cavities. They are a hair too long and jam against the sides which look to be shaped for a Strat-type pickup. Additionally, whoever robbed them loosened the pups and cut them out. The wires coming out of the EMG 81 are about 3/8 of an inch. I mickeyrigged(

) some wiring and soldered them to the switch, but by that time it was nearly two.

It would be annoying to get this far and have it still not work. Anybody have any idea at all what the original pups were?

Whenever I've looked over pix of your guitar, Steve, my guess has always been that it originally had EMG's, so I'm baffled. I had an S-284 Aviator project with single coil routes just like your guitar (I think/thought). I wound up putting EMG's in it because they were the only single coils that would go in those narrow holes.

Other single coils had the terminal tab located in the center of the pickup and would not fit due to the additional width created by this tab. The EMG's seemed to be the only type with the proper oval footprint.

It has the oval routes and the more I look at it, the more I think it might have had Californias or Dimarzios. :? Bluesdan, I can't view that page anymore. Thanks anyways.

Another long dead thread bubbles to the top!

After procrastinating for a ridiculously long time, I finally have this beast passing a signal. I replaced the third-hand EMGs with a Dimarzio Distortion+ and two Virtual 61 humbuckers (sorry Walter!).
The full-size bucker is wired via a pushpull switch, which allows me to run it in series for full output and parallel for a clearer output. All well and good, but...

This guitar was stripped of hardware and has all kinds of second hand replacement parts. The tremolo is a Kahler Traditional, and I'm not sure how to string the danged thing. At the moment, it's strung like a Fender bridge, but I know that can't be right. Those thumbscrews on the bridge aren't doing anything but looking pretty.

Be easy on me, it's my first locking trem!

Strung up, a little buzz, but it hasn't had strings for a year. The 61's are spanky!
