Even after our whole discussion about this in another thread and everyone going off on sharpening their knives, I wasn't really paying attention and slicing veggies for the BBQ Pork stir fry.... and sliced right into my thumb. DAMN!! I should know better. The worst part was when Don walked in and it looked like I'd sacrificed a freaking GOAT on the kitchen altar..... so much blood!! It's fine. Just messy. Lucky it's BBQ so a little red tint will go unnoticed, right?

Right?

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I was trying to figure out how you sliced a finger playing the mandolin. :)

Those mandoline slicers are super dangerous. My wife sliced the tip of one of her fingers off and hasn't touched one since.

So sorry to hear that, Tom. Those things can be lethal. I got my wife one for Christmas, and it freaks me out every time I see her use it.

Hope it mends quickly!

Hope you heal up OK.

Use the food holder. If it didn't come with one, get one. I will not use our mandolines (yes, we have more than one) without it.

For some odd reason my body heals SUPER quickly, so it's gonna be sore and it's my right thumb so no pick holding but in a couple of days I'll be way better.

I have to be very careful, as I take Eliquis blood thinner, but I'm weaning myself off it. I had a DVT about eleven years ago, but there's no sign of another one, so my doctor is gradually taking me off it. It takes longer for me to clot if I cut myself.

I hate to cook & sharp knives creep me out - so most likely I’m safe!

I take Eliquis as well for A-fib. Well, in case of A-fib. Blood thinners really do nothing for A-fib but help if you go INTO A-fib keep you from throwing a clot or embolus. Which is why there was so much blood. I'm like @bobouz and I cook so I can eat, but I don't really enjoy cooking. I washed it under the warm water and then held pressure with a paper towel and then put a fairly tight band-aid on it so I could finish dinner. Tomorrow I'll open it up and put a new bandage on it. You kinda forget how much you use your right thumb! Like if the cut was on the other side of my thumb, I wouldn't be typing this right now. That'll teach me, maybe. So irritating!!

p.s. - it did come with a holder for slicing but down at the end of the celery I wasn't using it. That'll teach me???

It will heal. Being a fine straight cut it might take a little longer than a more ragged cut so go easy on it for a bit or it may break open again (he said with the voice of bitter experience).

I have only every cut myself once on my mandolin. Once was definitely enough. I am insanely cautious now.

(We won't talk about table saws, OK? Except to say "Do not operate one immediately after having a heated argument with the spouse about that project you never ever wanted to do and have put off for years.")

I was a chef for years and use to cut myself and burn my hands all the time. I was young and crazy. I would tape it up with duct tape and play gigs all night. That was in the late 80s in NYC during the Hardcore Punk days. Now I'm old and had hand surgery on Friday and can't play guitar at all. What happened?

I'm always extra careful when slicing veggies....particularly onions and tomatoes. Paid the price many times.

So sorry you got a cut. I hope it's doing better today. I understand your pain. Really. I have a cut on my thumb, not even sure how it got there, and I have been pondering over the last few days how such a small injury can hurt that much. Of course it's right where I'm always whacking it on something. But, if this is my biggest issue then I really have no issues. I hope you mend quickly!

Here's a thought. No cooking until your thumb is well! And stretch that out as long as you can! (I don't especially like to cook either.). 🩹

Didn't even know what a mandoline was until this thread, Tom. Oh, my gosh.... That looks like a tool that deserves to be re-designed!

Hey, Tom, how's the thumb? Doing well? Today is the first day mine doesn't hurt at all so I would figure since you have super healing powers you should be well by now.

Are you still going to use the mandoline?
