hello, all. first post here. i've been enjoying reading the discussions for the last week or two.

a few years ago, i received a "handing down" of a gorgeous 1970 Guild F30 sunburst from my father. it's the first guitar he owned, it's the guitar i learned on as a teenager, and it means a lot to me. i just brought it in to a trusted local shop for a "tune up", and in honor of its upcoming 40th birthday bought it a brand new hardshell case from the new F-30 line reissue. same specs, so the case fits like a glove.

there's also a 1973 Guild 12-string F212XL in my future, currently still in my father's hands most of the time.

and then i have my 1987 GF25 NT that i bought new in 1989, the first "real" guitar that i've owned. (i was a Guild man from the start...) it means a lot to me, but not as much as the F30, which i consider priceless.

i now have two "parlor guitars", and i only "need" so many guitars at home (i also have a 1967 Gibson ES-335 sunburst...). i've just been bitten by the guitar acquisition bug, and i'm thinking i'd like to take the GF25 and trade up to a really nice, full-sized Guild. these days, i'm mostly into strumming, folk and post-modern indie folk style, and my jazz guitar roots are starting to grow again.

so, what models would people recommend i look into for a full-size strumming Guild with gorgeous, balanced sound? and should i go new, or look for used/vintage...?

oh, and do you think i'll come to regret selling my GF25...? :(

Hi Acidtest, and welcome - doubt many of the members will understand the 'need' comment above - though their wives or partners may :D

Thanks, Jerry. and you read (into) that line correctly. ;)

Welcome to the other side ac1dt3st.
*Interesting signature. Can we just call you, Acid? I think Cid is already taken. :?:
Seems to me that you're literally surrounded by great guitars with a promise for more, and it's also great to hear about the lineage of them all.
I wish you the best in all things Guilded.

Take care,
Joe

Tough call on selling the guitar you bought.... I wouldn't. That's a nice axe in its own right, and I'd recommend keeping it for your own sentimental value. It's truly yours, if you know what I mean, even though the others are great because they are your dad's.

I bought my first axe in 1981, and I'm thrilled that I still have it. As it turns out, it's something of a collectable as it's very rare, but that's actually of little interest to me.

Best wishes, and welcome aboard.

Welcome to LTG AC. My gut instinct is that you would regret selling the GF-25. I let mine slip away and I miss it; one of the most comfortable guitars I've ever played...

Yes. Most on this forum who have let a GF-series guitar go seem to come to regret it.

And if you really do have to sell the GF25, you'll almost certainly be able to find a happy LTG buyer. We'll have to be careful not to tell Dudley Brian-Smith.

I shouldn't speak, because the only guitar I ever bought new was my '73 Ovation 12-string. I've had enormous satisfaction from old guitars - they come with their own voices and their own resonances built right in. On the other hand, I'm sure there's satisfaction to be had from feeling a new guitar come into its own over the years - perhaps I'm just too impatient.

o.k., best wife ever. ;)

encouraged by everyone's feedback, i told my lovely wife i wanted to buy a new guitar. then i started to say, "i considered trading in my old one..." i didn't even get to finish the sentence as she asked rhetorically, "why would you sell your old guitar? that would be like selling your left arm." then she immediately started brainstorming ways we could display all my guitars in the living room or the stairwell... "you could get stands, or cases..."

wow. she's amazing, and that's why i love her. in any case, thanks to everyone for convincing me not to sell my left arm. but if i ever need to, i know who to ask first. :)

in other news... i've just ordered my new Guild! and i did decide to go new, since i have three vintage guitars, four with the Gibson. i'm not going to spill the beans just yet, but i'll be sure to post info and photos when i bring it home, hopefully this week.

by the way, my name's Rich. i'm not trying to be secretive or anything. i just like the screen name "ac1dt3st". ;)

Ac1dt3strich (has a nice ring to it),

If I had been so fortunate as to have owned a GF25 and then had to sell it, I would have regretted it (that's one of those comments that could bring on a serious headache, but I think you get my point).

You and I are truly blessed with great wives, apparently. My wife even "let me" hang a couple of guitars in the bedroom, and a banjo on the stairs that go down into my office from the bedroom. Of course, my office is my cave....so anything goes in here!

Hang on to her,
Joe

Wall hangers are way better - up off the floor where they're out of the way and don't get whacked all the time, hangers can be placed and moved to fit your wife's (and your) aesthetics, and guitars, we all know, are beautiful to look at. Check out, for example, Hercules hangers
That's what I used in the 8-guitar hanger and music bookshelf in my avatar.

I'll take it off your hands if it looks/sounds anything like this one.
hah! yeah, actually that's the *exact* guitar; looks and sounds absolutely identical to mine. his is even a 1987 as well, as referenced in a second video featuring blues licks (see below). in fact, i sent that video to a co-worker of mine just last week, when i was considering selling. he collects vintage guitars, and i was hoping to whet his appetite for the GF25. :D

here's the second video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieXZMsx8OB4

and by the way, speaking of display ideas... my co-worker had a carpenter create custom cases for his guitars, museum-style, as in glass-fronted wooden display cases. i'll post some pictures later. looks like his own private Hard Rock Cafe*. (*shudder*)

* i am not a patron, promoter, or even appreciator of Hard Rock Cafe(s). i only went to the one in Reykjavík, Iceland, because how many people can say they've done that...? ;)

if anyone's interested, here are the custom display cases my friend and co-worker had made for his collection. he has a lot more, but i'm only sharing a few. some are wall displays, and some floor. (none of the guitars are Guilds...)

After sleeping on it, I've decided that it's just a guitar, and that you really would be happier if you sold it. Call me. Please.
