...Good stuff Fungusyoung. About how many songs do you play in an hour?
can't help myself  :
probably more when there is no photographer around!

Nice one, Krysh!

Wow, in an hour.... easily 20 tunes. My songs are short and I normally chop down the covers too. Sometimes I play too fast and so far I've avoided being too chatty. In all honesty, I cannot imagine playing more than a 30- 45 minute set at this point.

Last night I played another open mic (two in one week!) up in the Poconos, and it went fairly well. Played a new tune I'd never done before, and had a good crowd response. It is so easy to get that deer in the headlights feeling, but I'm getting more adept at soldiering on when it happens. That's really been a big part of the goal up until now.

Seriously, thanks for all the interesting responses to this topic. People like Jerry make me feel a helluva lot less "alone" in going through this, which is awesome.

Oh, and one more thing to keep this Guild-related... my "go to" guitar right now is the D17. My Martin is also incredible to play out with, but the D17 is perfectly suited for my material and it's not such a high value or cosmetically flawless guitar so I ever worry about dragging it out with me. What a player it is.

Fungus - 20 in an hour, wow! That's 3 minutes each, including introduction, applause etc.
You are efficient :D

In a half-hour show a few weks ago I managed to squeeze in 8. In practice I had timed them at 32-33 minutes, and assumed that I'd play more quickly on stage, due to nervousness. However, I must have chattered between songs more than I'd planned, because the host, who runs a tight ship, was pointedly staring at her watch during my last tune

Right on, that's the goal, don't give 'em enough time to give me the hook especially on any one song. I'm a little concerned about a very nice murder ballad/duet I wrote because I'm thinking that one may approach 4 minutes. Might have to play the punk rock version to get out of some places alive! Funny thing is the girl that will sing the "she" part is a bar owner in E. Tulsa, and I just learned they host bands. Hmmm... if I ever get to Tulsa....

Not sure if this has been asked before Fungus, but do you have any recordings of your stuff kicking around?

I'd love to hear some.

I posted this one a while back, and will try to finish more songs soon. Recording hasn't happened in a while, been real busy with work/travel.

I like that and True Love Will Find. Nice stuff. Is there progress on the CD?

Thanks

Way too kind of ya, Graham. I think the CD is 85% written, but I haven't been home enough to record. Hopefully, soon... though I've already got trips lined up to Italy, Atlanta, Raleigh, Belgium, N. Ireland and India between now & early June.

True Love was recorded last summer at about 3 AM after way too much vino and whatever. I forgot that was still "out there" until you mentioned it. All sorts of issues with that performance... but I won't take it down until I've got another song or 2 to replace it with. FYI: That's played with a DV52.

The next time that I showed up, I noticed that a trap door had been installed in the stage :)

Hope it went well, Jerry!

I played out on Tuesday with a Tele again. I got a late slot, was way over-lubricated in the drinks department (plus on an empty stomach) so I was pretty horrible. But, the good news is this 23 year old kid that works at my company got up and played drums with me. He was fantastic, and we had a great time in spite of my sucking. He had such a great spirit about it too... never heard any of my stuff, and just got up there & made do. Aiming to briefly practice with him in a couple weeks before playing out together again. He's owed a much better night out of me!

hello all,

and especially a shout out to Mr. Guildmark for alerting me to this forum. My trio (as an introduction to the crowd and promotion for our upcoming performance dates) played Guildmark's open mic last tuesday nite. after our set Mark and I talked guilds (he admired my maple D30; and collared me as I left the stage) and he informed me of this group's existence.

I've been playing Guild guitars since acquiring my first good guitar in 1964 (a brand new T 100 D thin archtop with DeArrmond pups--my first was a really shitty Airline in 1959). I acquired an S100 Polara in 1969 or 70, my sweet D25 (I use it for my acoustic slide guitar) in around 1972 and my main acoustic axe (D30 maple back) sometime in the early 1990s. I have a lot of other guitars (including ones that also have a name beginning with "G" and even a few solidbody "F" guitars) and amps, but that is the extent of my guild collection..... I have huge GAS for a big-box Duane Eddy archtop but so far, no love.

glad I found you folks,

ce

I'm off to Folk at the Oak again tonight for more self humiliation

Show em how it's done Jer.

Have a blast mate.

Can't claim to do that - there are some VERY good guitar players go to Folk at the Oak and many were there last night - one guy last night (Rob - young compared to us geezers, probably late 20s early 30s) was one of the best I've ever heard (and I've watched Martin Simpson live and at close range, and Martin Carthy did a guest appearance at Folk at the Oak as well) :) He could sing too - and many really good guitarists are'nt the best singers 8) Least some folks reckon I can sing a bit even if my guitar playing isn't the best

However, by my own standards I was reasonably happy with what I did - which makes a change

Very glad you made it! :D Hope you saw the videos of your performance. They're linked from a post titled Guild Sighting: D-30 in the Miscellaneous forum.
One of the questions you might be asked here is,"What kind of acoustic bass guitar is the other fellow playing?"

Welcome!
Post well. Post often.

PS - Did I get the name of your trio correct?!
