I played out again on Tuesday. It was fun, but I was as sloppy as the roads were that night. Even though it was a good time, it made me want to play a lot better in the future.

Folk at the Oak last Thursday - Valentines Day - (don't actually have mics but same idea) was packed - about 50 people. Obviously sad gits as they should have been out wining and dining their partners, not at a Folk Club. Theme was 'Songs of love and hate'. Got one turn in each half, so did the oldest 'Lurve' song I know for the first - Greensleeves. It was very well received - I had several people come up and say how much they'd liked it ( ). I dedicated it to ice cream vendors everywhere because in the UK icecream vans announce they have arrived with a jangly tune - and 9 times out of 10 it's Greensleves. Second half did one of my own songs - went down OK but I think they preferred Greensleeves

Quick funny story... last week I had my D15 out at this place in Patchogue, NY (real close to Blues Dan if he sees this)

YO FY!!! Just saw this thread, I am assuming you were at The Brickhouse on Sunday night? Yes? No? Maybe So?
Ya gotta let me know if you are going there, or anywhere for that matter, for an open mic night, we'll meet up. A bud of mine is breaking my chops to do an open mic here in Sayville (Thursday nights @ Taste on Main Street). Been super busy with work, trying to get down there. Sundays at The Brickhouse is the best, mainly blues players. Give me a heads up for the next one, my Strat & Blues Jr. travel well............or if your going acoustic, the JF55 will make the trek.........

Dan, they have a pretty cool open mic at the Brickhouse on Tuesdays. The host was changed at some point early this year, and now it's a band that does a real nice job. I've played there the past 4 weeks and each time I was backed by the drummer, who picked up everything I was doing on the fly. One time a bassist played with me too. But, let me be real up front... I'm a total novice hack! This doesn't stop me from writing my own stuff or for being foolish enough to play those songs live (as well as butchering a handful of covers), but I just want to be honest about my skills because several others and the host band can really play. Oh, and there's a quite a mix of acoustic players and sometimes folks bring in electrics too. The house band leader plays a Strat through an AC30 (or maybe AC15), but the volumes are kept reasonable.

I'm going to be traveling the next several weeks, but I'll get back to the Brickhouse in March, maybe the first week of the month. I'll drop you a line to confirm this. At some point I want to bring my Tele because I've never played "out" with an electric before, and everyone at the Brickhouse has been amazingly nice and accommodating towards all participants.

Thanks for the tip on Taste... I get holed up in NY often so Thursday night options don't hurt. If you go to that one, let me know what you think of the open mic there!

Fung, definitely drop me a line when you are back. I'll let you know how the open mic at Taste goes. So Jimmy from The Josey Wales Band is no longer the host at Brickhouse on Sundays?? Jimmy plays a Strat, but he's been doing open mic nite there for more than a year. I haven't been down there since last Fall so I wasn't aware of any changes in personnel. No need to worry about being blown off the stage by me, I'm no SRV...........we'll just make sure that we LOOK like we know what we're doing for the pics that we'll post here.....

 Well that's why I have nice guitars, so at least I look like I know what I'm doing. would you rather hear a bad player with a bad guitar, or a bad player with a good one?

Fungus – Four Strong Winds, what a great choice! That’s about the first “real” song I ever learned on guitar, when I grabbed the old box that my sister had abandoned in 1968. It just occurred to me that I’ve been playing for 40 years (and still mediocre). Also, I’m a Rat, so 2008 is a double landmark year for me.

West – I had similar experiences. When I played bass in a rock band, I fell into the habit of watching the drummer, to help me keep time. The bandleader rapped my knuckles for that.

as a bassplayer, what is wrong with this?
when I play on our open stage in hamburg http://www.yamanjamsession.de I always watch the drummers bassdrum foot. especcially when I don't know the drummer or he or she is really good. since light is faster than sound it helps a lot to play much "tighter". and probably nobody in the audience is watching the bassplayer - beside other bassplayers

I hear ya, Hamhand. I haven't learned yet how to take audio from the mixer and use it as the soundtrack on my videos. Working on it, though. In the meantime, the audience ambience should give open mic players an didea of what they will sometimes have to overcome. :)

Krysh, I never seem to be able to pull your stuff up. I wish I could. I went to your link and clicked on Hamburg #1.....nothing. Maybe it's my connection, maybe it's me. I had the same trouble sometime back when trying to go to a jam session you posted.

Hi Michael:

Audiences like to see the faces of their entertainers, so the leader was correct in telling me to "face front". (Also, I spend enough time looking at my left hand  ).
I've learned to trust my ears, and reduce dependence on eyes.

cheers
